3. PhD scholarship in Characterizing the Effects of Compression and Reverberation on Spatial Hearing

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Are you interested in combining engineering and audiology to help create better healthcare for individuals with hearing impairment? The Hearing Systems Section at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), together with the Ear, Nose, and Throat and Audiology Department at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen University Hospital, seeks a qualified candidate for a 3-year PhD position. The project focuses on the investigation of the effects of compression and reverberation on spatial hearing in bilateral cochlear implant (CI) and bimodal listeners. Clinical guidelines for fitting compression to optimize spatial hearing remain limited, especially for bimodal fittings. Given the severity of compression in CIs, as well as the susceptibility CI users have to distortions in interaural level differences and to reverberation, CI recipients stand to gain tremendously from more optimized fittings that lead to better spatial hearing outcomes. However, the fact that each hearing aid and CI manufacturer implements compression schemes differently, and that clinically available fitting parameters alter these schemes and the resulting spatial cues in different ways, clinicians are left with little guidance on how to fit their patients binaurally.

4. PhD scholarship in Spatial Hearing-in-Noise Test as a Diagnostic Tool for Measuring Hearing Performance and Hearing Device Benefit

The project focuses on the evaluation of a spatialized hearing-in-noise test as a diagnostic tool for measuring performance and hearing device benefit. It has been argued that, through the use of virtual sound environments, we can provide better assessments of hearing ability and hearing device benefit since the measurements obtained in these environments more accurately reflect the real world than traditional measures of hearing do. However, the estimates of performance and hearing aid benefit with these novel, more ecologically valid tests and traditional tests are typically well- correlated, and consequently, the clinical value of such tests remains unclear. The real value of new, more ecologically valid tests lies in their potential ability to assess aspects of hearing that are not captured with traditional diagnostic methods. Building such evidence is the primary aim of the current project.

5. PhD scholarship in Audio-Visual Deep Learning for Cognitive Hearing Technology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Are you interested in combining deep learning and cognitive neuroscience to help create new hearing technology? The Centre for Auditory Neuroscience at DTU Health Tech would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position in audio-visual AI for cognitive hearing technology. The project focuses on developing deep learning methods that combine audio, video and eye-tracking data from user sensors. 7. PhD project on the design, synthesis and properties of large scale nanowire lattices

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Usually, nanoscale engineering using state-of-the-art semiconductor processing starts with a crystal wafer which is then shaped using lithography, etching, milling, or metal sputtering to achieve the desired shape and functionality. While this approach is powerful and flexible the processes leave the crystals damaged and uncontrolled at the nano scale. For some purposes such imperfections are disastrous. In contrast, when crystals are growing, atoms can self-assemble into perfect atomic arrangement, and in recent years, new techniques have been developed which use semiconductor processing to direct subsequent crystal growth, thus enabling design of structures with atomic uniformity. This PhD project joins an ongoing effort exploring this approach for design ultra-uniform lattices of nanoscale semiconductor wires grown by molecular beam epitaxy using “selective area growth”.

8. PhD in Immune Receptor Immunoinformatics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The Section of Bioinformatics, DTU Health Tech is world leading within Immunoinformatics and Machine-Learning. Currently, we are seeking a highly talented and motivated PhD student within the field of Immune receptor Immunoinformatics. Identification of T and B cell epitopes plays a major role in several biotechnological and clinical tasks and is central to our understanding of the immune system. T cells scrutinize the surface of cells for foreign peptides presented in complex with MHC (Major histocompatibility complex) molecules. MHC merely presents a minor proportion of the peptides produced within a cell on the cell surface, and only a minor proportion of these (termed epitopes) are recognized by T cells. Likewise, antibodies (or B cell receptors) recognize their molecular targets, termed antigens, in a highly specific manner via interactions between their binding site (paratope) and a specific region of the antigen (the epitope). Identifying the rules underlying the properties of these epitopes and their interaction with the target immune receptors is thus at the foundation for our basic understanding of adaptive immunity.

13. PhD position in piezoelectric ceramics design and characterization

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Do you want to contribute to a new way of designing and fabricating materials? Many ceramic materials are highly anisotropic, such that their properties are much higher in some grain directions. However, we are yet not utilizing this to the full potential in combination with the shape control 3D printing now allows for. With a Villum Young Investigator grant funded by VILLUM FONDEN, we will try to understand how to simultaneously optimize both shape and grain orientation of ceramics, with piezoelectric ceramics for energy harvesting as the test case. We now have an opening for a PhD-student for modelling and characterization of piezoelectric ceramics. The objective of this project is to investigate the optimum configuration of shape and microstructure of piezoelectric ceramics for energy harvesting. Your tasks will be a combination of design of shape and microstructure via considerations of anisotropy of the piezoelectric response and finite element modelling, and then a thorough piezoelectric and dielectric characterization of fabricated ceramics to validate the design.

27. PhD scholarship in testing lifetime of solid oxide electrolysis cells

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applications for a PhD scholarship in developing new test methodologies for performance and liftetime evaluation of solid oxide electrolysis cells. The research project is part of the project “Compass” targeting improving SOEC technology in general. The project is funded by Innovation Fund Denmark and the particular project will be carried out in a collaboration between DTU Energy and the Danish company Haldor Topsøe.
