3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Receptor Structures at the Plant-Microbe Interface
Summary of PhD Program:
A doctoral student position is available in the Förderer laboratory in the research project ‘Molecular basis of viral recognition and associated plant signalling’, at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam, Germany. The project includes state-of-the-art cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) of proteins involved in resistance of crop plants towards viruses. The protein structure knowledge will be used for crop improvement to generate new cultivars that are equipped for the future challenges in agriculture (climate change). Our recently founded junior group is located at the Max-Planck-Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology and part of the Department ‘Root biology and mycorrhiza’ (Prof. Caroline Gutjahr).

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Genetics of Behavior
Summary of PhD Program:
The Max-Planck-Institute for Neurobiology of Behaviour – caesar (MPINB) is a neuroethology institute located in Bonn that studies how the collective activity of the vast numbers of interconnected neurons in the brain gives rise to the plethora of animal behaviors. Our research spans a large range of scales from the nano-scale imaging of brain circuitry, to large-scale functional imaging of brain circuitry during behavior, to the quantification of natural animal behaviors.
The Research Group “Genetics of Behavior” is conducting research on the evolution of behavioural diversity and the genetic, molecular and neuronal changes driving these events. To do this we concentrate on the evolution of predation and kin-recognition behaviors found in the roundworm species Pristionchus pacificus and compare this to the microbial feeding species Caenorhaditis elegans.

Summary of PhD Program:
The research group Ubiquitin Signaling Specificity (Dr. Sonja Lorenz) invites applications for the position as a PhD student or Postdoc (f/m/d) – Specificity mechanisms of ubiquitin ligase complexes. Our laboratory aims to understand how the posttranslational modifier ubiquitin regulates myriad aspects of eukaryotic physiology. A major key lies in the action of ubiquitin ligases, a highly diversified enzyme class that recognizes specific substrates for ubiquitination and determines the types of modifications they are decorated with.
The immense potential of ubiquitin ligases for therapeutic applications has been illustrated by the clinical efficacy of immunomodulatory drugs in the treatment of hematological malignancies and recent advances of Protacs/molecular glues. Yet, efficient targeting of ubiquitin ligases in the clinic is still hampered by our limited understanding of their structural mechanisms and integration into cellular pathways.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hidden Heritage of the European Union
Summary of PhD Program:
Conventional accounts of European integration have often insisted on the novelty of the supranational law developed in that context, asserting its ‘sui generis’ character and highlighting its differences with earlier forms of international and regional integration. However, recent scholarship has questioned this view, noting that forms of supranational law and institutions already existed during the interwar period. This was the case within the League of Nations and its broader context, which included international(ized) institutions both in Europe (e.g. Danzig, Saar, Upper Silesia…) and in (semi-)colonial settings (e.g. League mandates, international cities, protectorates…).
