1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Structural (Mixed) Integer Programming in Combinatorial Optimization

Summary of PhD Program:

This projects seeks to investigate special instances of (mixed) integer programs ((M)IPs) with the intention of rendering them polynomial time solvable or establishing their hardness. Although traditionally known to be NP-hard, certain structured forms of (M)IPs exhibit properties that allow for efficiently finding solutions. Examples include block-structured (M)IPs, (M)IPs with a limited number of rows or columns, and (M)IPs whose constraint matrix is totally unimodular. Despite many recent advances in this field, numerous unresolved questions persist within this domain, and this project aims to solve some of them.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evolution of, and shifts within, the cybercriminal ecosystem

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD position is focused on characterizing the evolution of underground cyber-criminal convergence spaces in terms of their shift and balances across different channels and venues. Of particular focus will be the investigation of forum and telegram-based communities, with the goal of identifying specific communities where novel, credible cyber-threats are made available to (a restricted selection of) members of the cybercriminal community. To address this question, the PhD candidate will be tasked with identifying and infiltrating emergent cybercriminal communities, and covertly analyse their evolution and member activity. Of essential importance will be the development of an extensive measurement infrastructure to monitor identified channels, as well as the ability to run qualitative, subject-based studies (e.g. interviews) with members of said communities to understand motivations and rationales for community participation

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cybercriminal Frontiers of Social Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Cyber-attacks targeting human users are on the rise both in sophistication and scale. Social engineering comprises an evolving set of techniques and capabilities that allow attackers to target with increasing precision Internet users at scale. Novel AI-based content generation tools, such as LLMs employed by chatbots, are now increasingly available to criminals to run Internet-scale social engineering attacks over many vectors, from email to voice calls to Internet messaging. The availability of personal target information through social media and personal websites (Open Source INTelligence, or OSINT), combined with the capability to automatically process and synthetize this information, will soon allow attackers to deliver targeted social engineering attacks at Internet-scale.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Motivation & Performance of Employees Transitioning into Renewable Energy

Summary of PhD Program:

Are you eager to find out how we can motivate and enable employees to perform well in the renewable energy sector? Do you have a keen interest in understanding the psychological dynamics of employees when they transition from working from on-site mechanics to remote technology? Are you (motivated to become) an academic expert on employee attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors in changing work environments? Do you have a background in (social, work, organizational, cognitive) psychology, innovation management, consumer behavior, marketing, organization science, or any closely related social science study? And would you enjoy designing surveys, setting up online experiments, and analyzing the resultant data using statistical analysis techniques? Then we are looking for you to support our research team in the prestigious project HybridLabs: Accelerating Dutch innovations in offshore renewables through data-driven hybrid labs, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO).

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Graphene(oxide) colloids from pyrolysis carbons

Summary of PhD Program:

Solving some of our major societal challenges related to climate, energy and sustainability will require a significant reduction in CO2 emissions through implementation of completely new hydrogen-based or electrified industrial processes. Producing hydrogen via pyrolysis of (bio)methane, which captures carbon as solid by-products, is an important step towards the decarbonization of industries and to reach the Paris agreement. Your aim will be to develop novel processing pathways to electro chemically upcycle pyrolysis carbons into value added graphene(oxide) colloids.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Real-Time Rendering of Diffusion MRI Tractography Data

Summary of PhD Program:

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) tractography is a unique method that can map the complex micro-structural architecture of the human brain. While there have been computational advances in brain mapping, current visualization approaches have lagged behind and fall short of providing visual insight. Existing solutions often face issues such as difficulty in the interpretation of results, lack of scalability, and limited interactivity. This has a major impact on clinicians who often require the most detailed images in order to plan their surgical approach and avoid damaging crucial structures. There is, therefore, an urgent, unmet need for neuro visualization tools that address these limitations.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI-Assisted Surrogate Modeling for Complex Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

Your role will involve creating efficient and reusable surrogate models from diverse data sources. The aim is to improve the understanding and optimization of complex industrial systems, where the current common practice is to employ very complex simulations in the design process for tuning and evaluating different design parameters. Surrogate models are simple and efficient models that could in principle replace complex and heavy simulation models. Our goal is to develop and evaluate surrogate models in an industrial setting.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bioinspired Composites: Manufacturing and Multi-scale Characterization

Summary of PhD Program:

Biological structural materials, like mother-of-pearl and bone, despite containing a high-volume fraction of brittle constituents, calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate respectively, are among the most fracture resistant materials on the planet. This remarkable feature is a consequence of their hierarchical reinforcing architecture, that nature has genetically programmed to dissipate fracture energy across multiple length scales. Replicating the internal structure of biological structural materials in synthetic composites can pave the way for new classes of structural and functional engineering components, that have applications in the aerospace and automotive industries. Contrary to nature, synthetic composites are often obtained as the result of sequential processing steps that involve high pressure and high temperature. The effect of processing on the reinforcing structure and on the mechanical performance the composites is still object of debate.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Analog Signal Processing Exploiting Chip Scale Frequency Combs

Summary of PhD Program:

Photonics, a key enabling technology, is critical to several sectors, including sensors, automotive, and communications. The development of Photonic integrated circuits is crucial to the ongoing advancements in high-speed optical transceivers. A significant element of modern transceiver technology is digital signal processing (DSP), which drives the power consumption, size, and cost of the devices. Therefore, techniques are being sought to reduce the requirement for DSP or to diminish its complexity. TU/e, in collaboration with several European partners, is seeking to develop and exploit chip-scale micro frequency combs and make them applicable to a broad application space. Within this project, TU/e will be responsible for developing the technology demonstration between academia and industrial partners.
