1. Doctoral (PhD) student position in Epidemiology and Causal Inference
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The doctoral student project will be in the areas of epidemiology and causal inference. The general aim will be to understand how we effectively benchmark observational studies against randomized trials that ask the similar questions, with the wider goal of using these observational data to complement inferences made in trials. The project will consist of two broad parts: a methodological part, that aims to understand why differences in results may occur between observational studies and trials; and an applied part, which will use the target trial framework to design an observational study on the comparative effect of two treatments used in patients with acute coronary syndrome, that will then be benchmarked against the results of a trial that asks a similar question. The student will be expected to contribute towards study design, carry out analyses, and interpret results, as well as engaging in group meetings, departmental seminars, and relevant national and international meetings.

2. Doctoral (PhD) student position in preclinical nuclear medicine
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The student will develop a novel radioligand therapy for patients with brain cancer. First, tumour-targeting small molecules, peptides or antibodies will be labelled with radionuclides for molecular imaging (e.g. PET, SPECT). These will be extensively validated in in vitro and in vivo tumour models. Next, the most promising radioligands will be translated into their therapeutic counterparts, which will then be evaluated in in vivo therapy studies.

3. Doctoral (PhD) student position in artificial intelligence for breast cancer translational research
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The project will focus on the development of clinically useful artificial intelligence (AI) tools based on histopathology images, using well-annotated breast cancer patient cohorts. The studies will involve the development of models predictive for the biological properties of the tumors and for the effect of treatment and clinical outcome. The specific tasks include the development of AI models based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), multi-omic data integration based on deep-learning and integrative machine learning models as well as correlative analyses including survival analysis.

4. Doctoral (PhD) student position in Adipocyte Systems Biology
Summary of Doctoral Project:
We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious PhD student to join the research group of Drs. Mikael Rydén (co-supervisor) and Niklas Mejhert (main supervisor) at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge. The project will be performed in collaboration with Dr. Patrik Ståhl (co-supervisor) who leads a laboratory at KTH Royal Institute of Technology which is world-leading in spatial mapping approaches. Together, we will determine how the cellular landscape and microarchitecture of white adipose tissue is affected in health and disease. The studies are based on integrative analyses of single-cell, single-nucleus and spatial transcriptomic data and the results will followed-up in different cell culture systems of human adipocytes. Most of the work will be carried out in the Rydén and Mejhert laboratory in the NEO research building at Karolinska Institutet Campus Flemingsberg.

5. Doctoral position in neuroimaging and deep learning in Alzheimer’s disease
Summary of Doctoral Project:
In this research project, the student is expected to apply methods based on deep neural networks to identify the anatomical and functional brain connections that are most vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease and assess whether they can predict cognitive decline. The student will also have the opportunity to learn and apply computational models to identify the mechanisms responsible for damage to brain connections in AD. Finally, the student will include the methods developed in this project in the second version of our software ( BRAPH ), which will be released soon.

7. Doctoral student (PhD) position in oesophageal cancer
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The PhD project will examine factors that may prevent adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus, a cancer with increasing incidence and poor prognosis. In large-scale studies, based on merged data from several national health data registries in Nordic countries, the project aims to evaluate if the risk of oesophageal adenocarcinoma is decreased after obesity surgery, antireflux surgery and use of certain potentially anti-carcinogenic medications, i.e. aspirins, statins, and proton pump inhibitors.

8. Doctoral (PhD) student position in diabetes and cardiovascular disease
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The main aim of the project is to explore the role of different novel biomarkers in CVD and dysglycaemia, including mannose, mannose-binding lectin and copeptin, and their prognostic capacity. Our main hypotheses are that the prognosis for patients with CVD and dysglycaemia can be made less dismal by 1) the identification of new risk markers that may increase the understanding of the disease and its complications and 2) improve risk stratification and diagnostic implications by the use of new biomarkers.

9. Two doctoral (PhD) student positions in translational medicine & chemical biology
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The laboratory of Professor Thomas Helleday and the research group of Assistant Professor Sean Rudd is seeking to recruit two highly motivated and enthusiastic doctoral (PhD) students for independent projects on improving treatments for inflammatory diseases and cancer, respectively. The Helleday and Rudd groups are affiliated with the Department of Oncology-Pathology at Karolinska Institutet and are co-located at SciLifeLab, a national centre for molecular biosciences containing state-of-the-art high-throughput technology platforms together with world-leading research labs.

10. Doctoral student position in Synthetic biology for targeting glioblastoma
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The main project is to create solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) to be used as transfection vectors for transfection of glioblastoma (GBM) cell lines, GBM organoids and murine animal xenotransplantation models. The long-term goal is to develop vectors that specifically target and eliminate GBM cells. The prospective student will be responsible for set up a SLN production pipeline through a microfluidics platform including quality control of particle size and integrity and assessment of cargo encapsulation efficiency. In addition, the student will conduct transfection experiments wherein GBM cell lines/organoids/mice will be treated with SLNs. The project also involve single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and data analysis of both target and off-target cell populations.
