The Department of History at the University of Zurich offers a three-year research position in intellectual history as part of the project The Just City: The Ciceronian Conception of Justice and Its Reception in the Western Tradition (JustCity), funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant (2020-2025) and headed by Professor Benjamin Straumann. With a focus on Cicero’s conception of justice and its lasting intellectual legacy, the JustCity project delves into one of the most innovative and influential, yet widely neglected contributions the history of Western political thought has to offer. Not only does Cicero’s law-centred conception of justice, both within and between states, mark a significant departure from the virtue-centred conceptions of justice typical for earlier, Greek theories, it also paved the way for what has come to be known as the Constitutionalist Tradition in political thought, as well as for the emergence of natural and international law in early modern Europe. In order to fully appreciate its massive impact in the long term, the project will trace Cicero’s conception of justice as it is first and foremost expressed in the famous Carneadean debate in the Republic through four historical inflection points

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The laboratory of Didier Surdez (Bone Sarcoma Research Laboratory) at the University of Zurich is looking for a PhD candidate to decipher spatiotemporal drivers of metastasis in Ewing sarcoma. The group studies bone sarcoma and in particular Ewing sarcoma, the second most frequent bone tumor of childhood and adolescence. This cancer is characterized by a pathognomonic chromosomal translocation and few additional recurrent mutations. Among those, we identified STAG2 mutation as the most frequent one and highlighted its association with poor prognosis (Tirode et al., 2014, Cancer Discov). We recently showed how STAG2 mutation alters the generation of chromatin loops and conducts to increased invasive/metastatic properties of these mutated Ewing sarcoma cells (Surdez et al. 2021, Cancer Cell) and how STAG2 mutation favors the transformation of mesenchymal stem cells into Ewing sarcoma (Sole et al. 2021, Cancer Res).

Accurate movement control is the result of a complex interplay between various muscle groups whose activity is controlled by different areas of the central nervous system (CNS). Besides the corticospinal system, the phylogenetically old reticulospinal system is a key motor system controlling different elementary movements including posture, locomotion and reaching across vertebrate species. In contrast to the corticospinal system, there is only sparse knowledge on the motor physiology of the functionally important reticulospinal system in humans. 7. PhD student in applied evolutionary biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We are seeking a PhD student to join us (Prof. Anna Lindholm and Dr. Andri Manser in a research project at the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies assessing the potential of a naturally occurring selfish genetic element (called t haplotype) as a tool to control invasive mouse pests on islands where they harm endemic wildlife. The t haplotype is a supergene in house mice with two seemingly ideal characteristics for pest control. First, males that carry two copies of the gene (t/t homozygotes) are completely sterile. Second, males that carry only one copy of the t (+/t heterozygotes) pass the gene on to 95% of their offspring rather than the 50% expected under Mendelian inheritance (gene drive), allowing the genetic propagation of the sterile t in a population. Preliminary work suggests that sterile t releases could offer a powerful, versatile, and humane tool to eradicate target populations due to a lack of fertile males. The aim of the project is to assess the potential of the sterile t as a pest control tool from a wide range of methodological angles.

12. Ph.D. Student position: Investigations of catalytic RNAs by ensemble and single-molecule fluorescence

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This project focuses on the visualization of the splicing process of a catalytic RNA that takes place during RNA maturation. Self-splicing introns are fascinating examples of functional RNAs where structure and function are inextricably linked. We investigate the complex RNA folding mechanism of a mitochondrial intron of baker’s yeast and monitor its self-cleavage reaction by various fluorescent techniques, e.g. in the ensemble and on a single-molecule level, applying single-molecule Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (smFRET). For this purpose, we are fluorescently labeling the RNA at various positions. In this way, we want to understand the complexity of structure and the requirements leading to a perfect ligation of the coding regions.
