1. PhD Scholarship to Study Enhancers Communities in Lineage Determination of Stem Cells

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The ability of higher eukaryotic cells to control transcription is a prerequisite for specialization during development, and for maintenance as well as plasticity of cellular identity. It is becoming increasingly clear that this important regulation is dependent on physical compartmentalization of the genome into functional units and on elaborate cooperativity between transcription factors within these units. Understanding the interplay between chromatin topology and transcriptional activity constitutes one of the major current challenges in the transcription field. We have recently applied enhancer capture Hi-C to investigate enhancer interactions in human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) undergoing adipocyte differentiation. We showed that enhancers form highly interconnected enhancer communities that appear to act as hubs driving adipocyte lineage determination. Ongoing work in our group now focuses on delineating the interplay between chromatin topology and transcriptional regulation during adipocyte differentiation.

3. PhD Position in Fundamental Characterization of Pharmaceutical Suspensions

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Disperse system are two immiscible components mixed into one by the use of a stabilizer, with emulsions and suspensions being the classic examples. Disperse systems have found their use in practically all industries ranging from food over paint to pharmaceuticals. Despite their wide use, the full potential of disperse systems remains to be fulfilled as we have little to no understanding of the elementary constrains of these thermodynamically unfavourable mixtures. The stability of emulsions and suspensions is continuously challenged by a multitude of destabilizing phenomena, comprising sedimentation, Ostwald ripening, secondary nucleation, droplet fusion and aggregation. The current theoretical framework to define their stability relies on the DLVO theory for aggregation of aqueous dispersions from 1941 which is known to have a number of shortcomings. As basic research has been sparse in the field for many years, working with these systems relies on empirical observations.

4. PhD Position in Long-acting Injectable Formulations

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Long-acting injectables (LAIs) are a drug formulation option that provides a slow, sustained release of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) after administration. LAI formulations have several advantages relative to classical oral formulations, including reduced frequency of administration, enhanced therapy adherence and patient compliance, and potentially also a lower level of adverse effects when these are associated with peak plasma concentrations. Experience from the antipsychotic area has shown that these attributes of the LAIs often lead to improved therapeutical effect, whereby the formulation approach provides improved quality of life for the patients using them.

6. PhD Position in Pharmaceutical Formulations for the Eye

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Flux is a function of time, i.e. one way to optimize ocular drug absorption after topical administration is to increase the viscosity of the applied formulation. The viscosity would, however, slow down the diffusion of the compound through the formulation, hence the purpose of the concrete project is to investigate diffusion as a function of viscosity, compound vehicle affinity and compound size for “solutions” and particle size for suspension systems.

8. PhD Research Fellow in 2D materials

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The proposed project is concerned with theoretical explorations of two-dimensional monolayer and bilayer materials that are hosting intriguing electronic and opto-electronic phenomena, where in particular the twist angle of bilayers offering a new knob that can change both single-particle properties as well as many-body properties of the electron system. This has already manifested in the intriguing observation of superconductivity in twisted graphene bilayers. This project expands beyond condensed-matter physics and into the domain of optical sciences by hypothesizing that the twist angle can also be used to manipulate opto-electronic properties. In particular, the project focuses on semiconducting 2D materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) or transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), that can interestingly host excitons even at room temperature. The aim is to theoretically explore the formation of electron-hole pairs in twisted bilayers and to investigate how the excitons manifest in polaritons when hybridized with light fields.

11. PhD position in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The applications of artificial intelligence and data driven decision-making is gaining prevalence in society and organizations including inside innovation processes. AI is for example used to scape and analyze data for identifying, ranking and risk assessing innovation prospects and controlling innovation processes. However, AI applications in innovation processes is often constructed from compilations of codes that obscures transparency and makes it hard to understand the decision-making basis. Therefore, less is known about how AI design choices come to shape innovation processes in organizations. The main objective of the PhD project is to explore the role of AI applications in shaping innovation processes. You will be combining data science methodologies with interview-based and observation-based explorations to gain knowledge on how AI design elements, such as coding structures, enable decision-making outputs, how these outputs come to be trusted or distrusted by decision-makers and how they shape decision-making in sourcing, funding and controlling innovation processes. This will also include exploring biases in application of AI in innovation processes that negatively affects decision-making.
