1. Postdoc in Robust Learning of Probabilistic Deep Dynamic Models

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Division of Information Science and Engineering at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is currently recruiting one postdoc in Robust Learning of Probabilistic Deep Dynamic Models. The goal of this project is to develop new principles and methods for dynamical systems modeling, based on neural networks. Deep neural networks can help to model complex probability distributions (e. g., variational autoencoders, generative adversarial models) that are explicit in nature, allowing us to compute the likelihood of data as well as sample distributions efficiently. The use of explicit distributions will also allow us to exploit Bayesian learning principles. Such dynamical systems can provide efficient detection / estimation / processing of the underlying signal of interest. In addition, the processing and learning will be robust to noise. To learn robust low-dimensional structures from dynamic data, we will consider deep networks that most discriminate between dynamic models. Information-theoretic measures and concepts borrowed from causal inference will help us further to improve such dynamic models.

3. Postdoc in Vehicle to grid control and management

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Driven by the environment concern and sustainable requirement, electric vehicles (EVs) have attracted global attention as they provide more environmentally friendly transportation. However, the large-scale utilization of EVs will greatly increase the electricity consumption in the grid. If charging of EVs are not managed, it will pose significant impact on grid and require expensive grid reinforcement. On the other hand, vehicle to grid (V2G) and smart charging will provide opportunities to minimize grid impact and provide grid support for smooth integration of EVs. This project will hire two researchers, one will work on the design of smart charging strategies for EV integration as well as energy management of energy hub, the other will work on the power electronics and control for V2G systems.

4. Postdoc in testing of software-defined networks

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Industrial robots usually operate within a “safety cage” to ensure that workers are not harmed by a robot in operation. We also need the same type of security, which is simple and explainable, for networks. Novel mechanisms that can be embedded in the network through hardware-accelerated programmable networks or kernel extensions are the enabling technology for this type of security at the network level. However, current security architectures are not built for this. We propose a solution using machine learning and test generation, leveraging the expertise in explainable machine learning and networking from UIUC and in testing and verification from KTH. This project, called “Cyber safety cage”, will combine different disciplines to apply the idea of a safety cage to the network layer. KTH and UIUC will collaborate closely in this project. At KTH, test case generation will validate diverse traces against the model and also showcase potential malicious behavior, validating both positive and negative outcomes.

13. Postdoc in control and voltage modulation in electric drives

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The great majority of electricity worldwide is generated through electric generators. Electric motors then consume approximately 30% of that electricity. Do you want to achieve sustainable climate change? Then it would be best if you worked on improving the usage and efficiency of electric machines. Today, only 20% of electric machines are driven by frequency converters – the so-called electric drives. The share increases daily due to the evident efficiency benefits and the development of electric transportation, renewable energy sources, and robotics, which cannot exist without electric drives. KTH wants to be part of this growth and contribute to the improvements in this research field, leading to a more sustainable society.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Professor Tuuli Lappalainen’s and Dr. Stefan Bauer’s research groups are looking for a postdoc for a collaborative project to develop novel computational methods to infer causal regulatory networks in human cells from large-scale perturbational experiments. Large-scale in vitro cellular experimentation with genetic interventions (e.g. with CRISPR) and cellular readouts are opening exciting novel opportunities to infer causal mechanisms of regulatory networks of the cell. Integrated with genetic and genomic data of human diseases, this has important applications in understanding processes underlying disease pathologies and e.g. identifying drug targets. There is great demand for new machine learning methods, such as those based on active and reinforcement learning, to extract biologically meaningful insights from these complex data. Ideally, these methods and data form a feedback loop the statistical inference further informs prioritization of maximally informative next set of experiments.
