1. Phd Position: Rolling Contact Fatigue Life and Material Optimization for Micro drop/dosage
Summary of Doctoral Project:
This project aims to develop advanced simulation methods and engineering rules necessary for integrated analysis of fatigue life and lubrication performance of roller raceway contacts in (high speed) bearings in relation to time varying starved inflow conditions of a very local nature, e.g. generated by minute drops from micro-dosage or drop-on-demand systems, and their interaction with surface roughness. You will work with top experts in the field of Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication, and develop Multigrid/Multilevel methods to very efficiently solve a 3D mechanical contact problem simultaneously with the thin layer lubrication flow of trains of droplets. The novelty in this project is also that the effects of material topology as grain structured heterogeneous anisotropic material with varying crystallographic orientation will be incorporated.

4. 2 PhD positions Transport in Soft Porous Media for Advanced Grease Lubrication
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Soft porous media have the ability to retain and release fluids, depending on the affinity between the fluid and the porous matrix, the geometry and elasticity of the matrix, as well as external stimuli. Intensive research has been dedicated in recent years to controlling wettability, adhesion, friction and other (static) macroscopic properties of these materials in the context of liquid-infused surfaces and functional coatings. In a new interdisciplinary project between chemists, physicists and mechanical engineers and in collaboration with industrial partners, we study with a team of three PhD students the principles governing fluid transport and release within soft porous media, such as lubrication greases for bearings. We will explore novel strategies of lubrication using responsive polymer brushes with the ultimate practical goal to provide pathways for better lubricants, e.g. for wind turbines and electric vehicles. 2 PhD positions are available in the Physics of Complex Fluids group at the University of Twente. In collaboration with a third PhD student who focuses on surface and materials’ synthesis, your focus will be on the characterization modelling of fluid transport in wetting oil films that are stabilized by functionalized surfaces.

7. PhD position in Germanium photodiodes
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The IDS group has a vacancy for a PhD student to work on photodiode detectors for photonic integrated circuits (PICS). The aim of the project is to research and develop germanium photodiodes that are sensitive in a broad spectral range encompassing visual to short-wavelength light up to 1600 nm. The basic process will be a further development of our broadband Ge-on-Si “PureGaB” diodes that have been demonstrated with exceptional broadband responsivity and low dark currents. Concomitantly, the diodes should be modified to allow integration in an existing waveguide photonic circuit platform, and performance suitable for quantum computing circuits is aspired. The PhD will focus on the device fabrication and work with a postdoc for the design, characterization and optimization of the photodiodes. They will work closely with 2 PhD’s already studying the application of pure boron layers in other semiconductor devices.

8. PhD position: Coastal Vulnerability (CVI) assessment for present and future
Summary of Doctoral Project:
To assess coastal vulnerability due to erosion and/or inundation, the Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) is one of the simplest and most commonly used methods (Koroglu et al., 2019). An assessment of vulnerability can contribute to the decision-making process for coastal planning and management. This PhD project aims to perform a state-of-the-art coastal vulnerability assessment for both present time and future scenarios, identify temporal pathways of CVI changes and potentially extend to detailed coastal impact assessment and reduction investigation for some hotspots using sophisticated numerical modelling approaches (e.g. Delft3D FM, PCR model, G-SMIC model) and explore ways to increase resilience at selected hotspots.

9. PhD position “Energy Hubs for Integration of Large-scale renewable Energy: Modelling
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Increasing decentralized power production from wind and solar are putting a strain on the capacity of the electricity grid in different parts of the Netherlands. Consequently, new projects cannot be connected to the grid preventing growth of renewable energy production. Also, when power demand is exceeding the transport capacity, an extra alternative electricity flow is needed to fulfil the power demand. This could be solved by increasing capacity: grid expansion. However, this is expensive and takes years of time to be realized. Although grid expansion is inevitable in the long term, a solution is needed for a short/medium term. If the copper route (i.e. reinforcing the grid by adding more cabled) is not a viable option anymore, then an alternative route through conversion to energy carrying molecules can be a solution. For this purpose we need major breakthroughs, advanced technologies and new integrated renewable energy systems for the energy hubs. Such an energy hub is a place where different forms of sustainable generation, storage and conversion come together to ensure a reliable supply of clean energy to customers in its surrounding.

10. PhD Candidate for the Horizon Europe Project PARATUS Cloud-based decision tool
Summary of Doctoral Project:
PARATUS is a four-year project that will start on the 1st of October 2022. The PARATUS consortium encompasses 19 partners from 11 countries: Netherlands, Spain, France, Austria, Italy, Romania, United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, Poland, and Thailand. In the PARATUS project, we aim to develop an open-source platform for dynamic risk assessment that allows us to analyse and evaluate multi-hazard impact chains, risk reduction measures, and disaster response scenarios in the light of systemic vulnerabilities and uncertainties. These services will be co-created within a unique transdisciplinary consortium of research organisations, NGOs, SMEs, first and second responders, and local and regional authorities. To gain a deeper understanding of multi-hazard impact chains, PARATUS will first conduct forensic analysis on historical disaster events, augment historical disaster databases with hazard interactions and sectorial impacts, and exploit remote sensing data with artificial intelligence methods. Building on these insights, PARATUS will then develop new exposure and vulnerability analysis methods that enable systemic risk assessment across sectors (e.g. humanitarian, transportation, communication) and geographic settings (e.g. islands, mountains, megacities).
