2. PhD Position in Scientific Computing focusing on Secure Federated Machine Learning
Summary of PhD Program:
The main objective of federated machine learning is to train a global machine learning model based on data that is distributed across heterogeneous data providers, but without requiring the raw data to leave the local data provider. While the FedML paradigm has been shown to preserve confidentiality of the data between the local data providers and the global model aggregator, there are still open challenges in ensuring that the training process is secure and private against malicious data providers, as well as to monitor the integrity of the training process without having access to the local data.

5. PhD Position in the medical humanities/ immunology
Summary of PhD Program:
The proposed project will investigate scientific understandings of the cells of the immune system and how these notions affect research and education in life sciences and health care. The objective is to determine the extent to which metaphorical images of the function of immune cells influence current research approaches in the life sciences, and education for health care professionals. Further, the project will explore the potential of alternative ‘scientific narratives’ that acknowledge the crucial functions of immune cells for development and homeostasis by formulating novel research questions on the generated multi-omics data available in the Phillipson laboratory, by collaborators and public domains.

7. PhD Position in Physics
Summary of PhD Program:
Our research program in Chemical and Bio-Molecular Physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University focuses on understanding the fundamental properties and ultrafast processes of matter at the atomic length and time scales of Ångströms and femtoseconds. We have a leading position in the use of X-rays for probing atoms, molecules and chemical and biomolecular systems. We develop and apply novel X-ray methods and instrumentation and aim at revealing how the properties of a system result from its electronic structure and dynamics with applications in environmental, biophysical and chemical systems.

8. PhD Position in electromobility
Summary of PhD Program:
The electrification of the transport sector is vital for a successful transition to a fossil-free society. A lack of capacity in the electric grid threatens to slow down the shift towards a more sustainable energy system. The project aims to study how increased demand flexibility through smart charging can benefit the different actors involved. Moreover, it aims to investigate technical possibilities and challenges with smart charging by means of tests and analyses in real environment. The research team at Uppsala university will work in tight collaboration with the industrial partners of this project, including Volvo Cars and CEVT. The project is financed by the Swedish Electromobility Centre (SEC), a national research centre for electromobility, founded by the Swedish Energy Agency in partnership with Swedish automotive industry and academia.

9. PhD Position in antibiotic resistance
Summary of PhD Program:
Thomas Tängdén’s research group conducts in vitro studies on antibiotics and resistant bacteria. The purpose of the planned project is to find antibiotic combinations that are effective against multidrug-resistant bacteria and can suppress emergence of resistance. Also, we will investigate how antibiotic dosing can be optimized. In the studies, we use clinical isolates as well as laboratory strains in which we have modified the setup of genes encoding enzymatic resistance and impermeability (porin loss). The effect of antibiotics is investigated by MIC-testing, static and dynamic time-kill experiments and automated time-lapse microscopy with subsequent image analysis. The project also includes handling and analysis of whole-genome sequencing data.

10. PhD Position in Economic History, within Uppsala University’s graduate programme in medical humanities
Summary of PhD Program:
Laboratories of the future? Complex buildings, flexible organizations and the research and education of life science. While research and education within the field of biomedicine are constantly evolving, they must be housed in capital-intensive, permanent physical infrastructure. Beginning in the latter part of the 20th century, notions of ‘flexible buildings’ have therefore developed alongside new ideals of ‘flexible organizations’. The purpose of this PhD project is to investigate the historical development, and consequences of, this dynamic relationship: between the ways in which biomedical research and education have been organised, and the physical environments constructed and adapted for such pursuits. It is proposed that the focus of such a study would consist of analysing the planning, funding, adaptations and uses of the laboratory facilities at Uppsala Biomedical Centre (1966-).

13. PhD Position in electrification of aircraft and airports
Summary of PhD Program:
In this research project, you as a doctoral student have the opportunity to contribute to research and development for future electrified and sustainable transport system, with a focus on aviation. In the future, more electrified aircraft are expected to require access to safe charging. Electric aircraft for two passengers are already available today. In the future, electric aircraft are expected to be developed and designed for more passengers. Future electric aircraft can initially go shorter distances than today’s traditional aircraft. Electric aircraft can contribute to tourism, business collaborations, goods transport, etc. The design development of electric aircraft is expected to take place together with further development of battery- and hydrogen technology. New electric aircraft open up questions regarding the future role of airports and the possibility of charging several electric aircraft in a fast, safe and efficient way based on flight schedules.

14. PhD Position in Chemistry – Specializing in Molecular Biomimetics
Summary of PhD Program:
The research project is part of an EU funded network (PhotoSynH2), which aims at developing novel methods for the production of green H2 as a solar fuel. The hydrogenase enzymes are key components in any such technology, as these are central to H2 metabolism and catalyze the formation and oxidation of H2 gas. To realize their biotechnological potential, we need highly efficient hydrogenase enzymes that are well integrated into the metabolic pathways of technologically relevant host organisms. The project will address this challenge via characterization of novel examples of this diverse enzyme family, followed by their optimization via rationale design to ensure stable and high H2 productivity in photobioreactors.

17. PhD Position in systematic biology
Summary of PhD Program:
The Burki lab was recently awarded an ERC Consolidator grant (PlastidOrigin) that aims to study one of the most transformative events in eukaryote evolution–the origin of the photosynthetic organelles (the primary plastids). The main aims of this PhD position are to study the roles of genetic transfers in the integration of an endosymbiont into an organelle. For this we will study the lineage Paulinella–a lineage of amoebae (unicellular eukaryotes) that established primary plastids relatively recently. While most of the research on Paulinella has been done on the photosynthetic species, i.e. the species that diverged after the establishment of plastids, we will instead look at the heterotrophic species that diverged close but before plastid establishment to test the hypothesis that gene transfers facilitating the endosymbiotic integration occurred before the establishment of the plastids from varying food sources. A suite of methods will be employed, including long-read metabarcoding, transcriptomics, phylogenomics, cultivation, microscopy.
