Summary of PhD Program:
Can we use the energy from sun and wind to make renewable molecules at sea and how do we prove that hydrogen is really green? With MuSe (Molecules at Sea) we want to explore the opportunities for producing and important renewable molecules, such as hydrogen, methanol and methane, from offshore energy production as we know it from wind or solar parks. Your research is part of work package 6 of MuSe and concerns the certification of (renewable) hydrogen and other green molecules. Not only at the EU level, but also in various EU Member States, governments and companies are already taking initiatives to support and enable the swift roll-out of (imported) CO2-friendly molecules. In particular, a standardized comprehensive legal framework for hydrogen is crucial to form a single a single liquid and competitive market for green molecules in Central Western Europe. Moreover, the Belgian government intends to explore cooperation between the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany and France to establish international and European standards for the certification and trade of renewable molecules.

The “WAVES” research group (http://www.waves.intec.ugent.be/) is the expertise center of the Department of Information Technology of Ghent University/IMEC in Belgium for measurements, simulations and modeling of the radio channel and electromagnetic exposure of current and future wireless networks. 6th generation wireless networks will use new mm-wave and sub-terahertz spectrum bands to realize the bandwidth needed for ubiquitous connectivity. The exploration of this new radio spectrum is needed to enable beyond 5G high-capacity applications. In the 140 GHz D-band (110 to 170 GHz) sufficient bandwidth is available to realize 6G applications such as wireless backhaul and fixed wireless access, close proximity data kiosks, and augmented and virtual reality. Device-free D-band passive indoor localization (radar) plays also a critical role in emerging assisted-living applications in the elder care, as well as in smart home, entertainment, industrial, and security applications.

The research team of Prof. van Loo and Prof. Esther. Hoste has a vacancy for a highly motivated PhD student to investigate the role of different cell death modalities in keratinocytes and their implications for injury repair and skin tumour formation. Our research group currently is involved in research projects in the energy domain, including mostly smart grid applications. The focus of our AI4E team in these projects is on data analytics, as well as coordination algorithms for, e.g., demand response. A major objective of the applications we want to support is to accommodate large penetration of renewable sources (wind mills, solar panels, etc.) without requiring excessive investments in the power grid infrastructure.
