4. Researcher in biochemistry
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
We are searching for a biochemist, structural biologist, biophysicist or similar for a 2 year research position within Cecilia Blikstad’s group. Research within the group focus on biochemical investigations of CO2 fixation in cyanobacteria. Rubisco is responsible for the majority of CO2 fixation on Earth. Despite this centrality, it is a relatively slow and promiscuous enzyme. To overcome this, cyanobacteria have evolved a CO2 concentration mechanism (CCM) which produces a high CO2 concentration near Rubisco and ensure efficient carboxylation. The CCM consist of inorganic carbon transporters that actively accumulate bicarbonate in the cytosol and a protein based bacterial organelle called the carboxysome.

5. Postdoctoral position in biochemistry of cyanobacterial CO2 fixation
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The carboxysome encapsulate Rubisco and carbonic anhydrase within a protein shell. It remains unknown exactly how this 250+ megadalton protein complex self-assembles and regulates with high fidelity inside cells. We use a combination of biochemistry, enzymology, structural biology, synthetic biology and bioinformatics to study various aspects (function, structure, assembly, regulation etc.) of the cyanobacterial CO2 concentrating mechanism. You will work in a project focusing on protein interactions, regulation, and activity of the carboxysome and its encapsulated enzymes. The acquired knowledge will lead the way for downstream applications aiming at enhancing photosynthetic efficiencies in future microorganisms and crops.

In a facility where a typical experiment lasts few days, costs tens of thousands of pounds/Euros and takes 6+ months to apply for, any improvements to the experiment are of large value. The effort will be based on an existing code-base we have developed to design optimal thin film structures for a given purpose. These structures will be fabricated by other members of the collaboration and measured in neutron reflectivity experiments. Participation and collaboration with all other parts of the project is strongly encouraged and if the candidate chooses they can participate in the large scale facility experiments.

11. Post-doctoral researcher in gene therapy for Alzheimer’s disease
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Alzheimer’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease and is characterized by pathologically altered forms of the protein amyloid-beta in different parts of the brain. The treatment, which is aimed at increasing the levels of the signal substance acetyl choline, only relieves symptoms and is not aimed at the underlying disease process. There is therefore a great need to develop new therapies. One possibility may be to influence the formation of amyloid-beta with new gene therapeutic methods. The gene encoding this protein, APP, may in rare cases be mutated, leading to the formation of either more amyloid-beta, or an altered form of the protein. However, the vast majority of cases are sporadic, but even for these there is evidence that increased expression of APP is central in the disease process. In an ongoing project, the research team is developing a gene editing method to reduce the formation of amyloid-beta.

19. Postdoctoral position in experimental hadron physics
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The main physics interests of the Uppsala group are studies of hyperons – three-quark systems just like the protons but where one or several of the light quarks are replaced by one or several heavier quarks, e.g. strange quarks. By studying how hyperons are produced and how they decay, we can measure their internal structure at the femtometer level – that is, distances of 10-15 m! In this way, we gain insights into how the strong interaction bind quarks into the systems we are made of. Our group has recently taken the first “snapshot” of the creation of a hyperon and an antihyperon from the energy produced in an electron-positron collision. The next step is to reconstruct the full process. Electron-positron collider experiments such as BESIII and the Belle II experiment in Japan are excellently suited for this purpose.

26. Postdoctoral position in Induced pluripotent stem cell disease modeling
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The group is focused on functional genomics including the identification of mechanisms and pathophysiology associated with genetic disorders. Over the last decade the research group has identified a number of novel genes/gene variants and mechanisms associated with disease. A limiting factor in the studies of central nervous system (CNS) disorders has been models that recapitulate the human brain. To this end, the group has established induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology. We have reprogrammed somatic cells from patients with various genetic disorders of the CNS. The goals are to identify novel disease mechanisms at the cellular and molecular levels as well as to develop a 3D model for CNS (i.e. organoids). Analysis is performed on entire cell-populations as well as on single cells using e.g. functional assays, immunostainings, transcriptome- and methylome-profiling. Models are validated using CRISPR/Cas9 modifications of iPSC. The projects aim to reveal novel mechanisms and biomarkers associated with CNS disorders for improved diagnostics as a step towards drug development.
