We seek a highly motivated, enthusiastic person with the ambition to gain insight and publish papers in leading, international journals, with strong interpersonal skills and the capability to work in close collaboration with others. Experience working in an interdisciplinary team is considered an advantage. The position is associated with the newly funded (the Research Council of Norway) project “A Norwegian BioGenome initiative: the initial launch phase” (EBP-Nor). As a launch phase, EBP-Nor will establish the protocols and analyses tools for sequencing a selected number of species (around 150) to a high quality reference genome standard (chromosome length assemblies). EBP-Nor is a national consortium – led by UiO (Dept of Biosciences, Centre of Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis; CEES) – that includes the large universities of Norway, research institutes and private and governmental organizations. The post doc will work in a multidisciplinary team that includes both national and international collaborations. The main tasks will be planning and design of reference genome sequencing, genome assemblies and annotation (and part of the large team) – as well as contributing to planned pan-genome and population genomics projects at CEES. In a longer time perspective EBP-Nor will be extended to larger scale biodiversity sequencing to include all eukaryotic species in Norway (as part of an international effort).

The group of Dr. Nolwenn Briand, Project Leader at the Department of Molecular Medicine, University of Oslo, seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to undertake in vivo metabolic studies, with the aim to investigate the effect of adolescence sleep deprivation on adipose tissue maturation and metabolic homeostasis in the young and the adult. 7. Postdoctoral Fellow – clinical translation of cell-based therapy
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
In the project, you will work on a bleeding disorder called inherited factor (F) VII deficiency. FVII is a vital protein in the blood coagulation process and an inherited deficiency of this protein is caused by mutations in the F7 gene leading to severely reduced activity of the FVII protein in the blood. Clinically, these patients experience frequent and sometimes severe bleeding episodes, and the only treatment today is replacement therapy that is expensive and invasive. We are using CRISPR gene editing and advanced cell reprogramming techniques to correct the mutation in the patients’ own cells and establishing transplant procedures to restore FVII activity and function. Drug treatment is the most common therapeutic intervention. However, there is large interindividual variability in drug response, affecting both efficacy and toxicity. Emerging evidence implies an extensive role of gut microbiota in determining the systemic exposure of drugs. However, despite their important consequences for human biology, the gut microbes’ involvement in drug metabolism and transport is poorly understood and data from human subjects are lacking. In this project, rich samples and clinical data from a previously conducted clinical trial designed to shed light on the impact of gut microbiota composition on key drug metabolizing enzymes and transporters will be utilized. The main objectives in the project are to investigate the impact of gut microbiota on drug disposition, i.e. key drug metabolizing enzymes and drug transporters, and to our ability to predict the effect of the host-microbiome interplay on an individual’s drug response using an integrated approach combining in vitro and clinical data with mechanistic modeling. Both local gastrointestinal and systemic effects of the microbiome on drug disposition will be investigated. The project will be performed in collaboration with University of Manchester (Professor Aleksandra Galetin) and University of Gothenburg (Professor Fredrik Bäckhed).

The candidate will be working as a part of the Nordforsk funded project “Pathogens, Pandemics and the Development of Nordic Societies (NORDEMICS)”, which ties five universities in Scandinavia together into an interdisciplinary consortium, with 2 PhD students and 3 Postdocs/Researchers working within this project. Nordemics is dedicated to understanding how various societal and environmental factors influenced the dynamics of epidemic and pandemic infections in human populations. The PhDs and Postdocs/Researchers will have the opportunity to collaborate with each other and leverage the expertise of the NORDEMICS group as a whole into their own projects. At CEES, the appointed Researcher will aim to understand why plague disappeared from the Nordic countries during the 17th and 18th century. Many biological, social and economic reasons are offered for why plague disappeared from Europe, but none are conclusive. The rather unspecified “improved hygiene” hypothesis is often presented without considering contrary evidence, and the “displacement of the black rat reservoir by brown rats” hypothesis does not consider that plague thrived in locations outside Europe where brown rats dominated the local population of rats. More interesting are hypotheses that look at increases in regional temperature affecting flea- or lice-borne plague transmission, increased use of quarantines, and changes in the intensity of trade between the Nordic countries and other parts of Europe.

The Nordic Consortium for CO2 Conversion (NordCO2) is a network for Nordic researchers working on chemical CO2 conversion reactions in the Nordic countries. The position open at the Hylleraas Centre is expected to contribute at the Research (90%) and Innovation (10%) WPs.
