20. PhD scholarship in Self-Supervised Learning for Decoding of Complex Signals

Summary of Doctoral Project:

To date, most successful applications of deep learning in signals and decoding are based on supervised learning. However, supervised learning is contingent on the availability of labeled data, i.e., each sample has a semantic annotation. The need for labeled data is a serious limitation to bio-medical applications at scale and complicates the maintenance of real-life neuroimaging systems. Here we will combine international open source data with local, high quality labeled data. The typical situation is that unlabeled data is abundant, and this has given rise to paradigms such as semi-supervised and self-supervised learning (SSL). Both directions in SSL are based on combining large amounts of unlabeled data with limited labeled data. While semi-supervised learning invokes generative models to learn representations that support learning with few labels, SSL is based on supervised learning with a supervisory signal derived from the data itself.

21. PhD scholarship in Denoising Diffusion Variational Autoencoders

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Deep generative models are being applied to image, text and speech synthesis and are showing promise for molecule design for material science and drug discovery. State-of-the-art methodology for deep generative model use either auto-regressive, flow-based or latent variable models. The variational autoencoder (VAE) is a deep latent variable model that has attracted a lot of attention. The denoising diffusion VAE uses a very simple diffusion model to encode the latent variables. Remarkably, this has led to robust scaling to very deep hierarchies with thousands of layers of latent variables and state-of-the-art performance in synthesis and density modelling. These results are very recent and there are ample possibilities for exploring generalizations that retain the robustness of the framework while making the model more flexible. This will be the topic of the PhD project.

28. PhD scholarship in Novel n-type Materials for Emerging Thin-Film Solar Cells

Summary of Doctoral Project:

If you want to establish yourself as a scientist within materials and devices for sustainable energy generation and if you have the ambition to break new ground at the forefront of technology, this Ph.D. scholarship is for you. At the Photovoltaic Materials and Systems Group at DTU Fotonik, we work with emerging materials for photovoltaic applications. By joining the group you will work within novel n-type materials for the solar cells of the future. At DTU Fotonik, we have many years of experience with the environmentally-friendly and non-toxic solar cell absorber material Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS), both as a single-junction and as a part of a multi-junction solar cell. CZTS and many other thin-film solar cells use the toxic n-type material cadmium sulfide (CdS), which does not result in an optimal band alignment at the p-n interface for CZTS. The aim of this Ph.D. scholarship is to design new, tunable, Cd-free n-type materials, which can enhance the efficiency of emerging thin-film solar cells. The group at DTU Fotonik is world leading within tandem systems of solar cells with CZTS as the toplayer.

29. PhD scholarship on applying NGS in the epidemiology of foodborne infections

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Foodborne infections like salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis remains an important global public health issue, particularly in low-resource countries, where surveillance and mitigation efforts are limited. An important reason is that the prevention and control of foodborne infections is complicated: Most of these infections are transmitted not only through a variety of foods, but also through the environment (e.g. contaminated water), by zoonotic means (e.g. direct animal contact) and person-to-person transmission with the contribution of each transmission route and source varying across diseases, populations, geographical areas and seasons. Targeted intervention, among other things, consequently requires evidence on most important sources and transmission routes for these infections.

30. Experimental and theoretical PhD projects in Nanophotonics and Quantum Technology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Research Center NanoPhoton – Center for Nanophotonics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a number of open PhD positions within experimental and theoretical physics and engineering. The purpose of NanoPhoton is to explore the phenomenon of sub-wavelength localization of light in semiconductor nanocavities. This leads to an extreme enhancement of the optical energy density and thereby opens new possibilities for studying light-matter interaction in hitherto unexplored regimes. Important applications include new devices for quantum technology, like lasers with reduced quantum noise and nonlinear devices working at the level of a few photons. Moreover, the extreme enhancement and small foot-print of the nanocavities offer the means to establish on-chip interfacing between electronics and photonics, which would lead to substantial energy-savings. Progress, however, is required in several research disciplines, including nanofabrication and device characterisation, and quantum theory of light-matter interaction in nanostructures.

35. PhD scholarship in Mid-IR Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors

Summary of Doctoral Project:

If you aim at scientific excellence and want to establish a career as a scientist within mid infrared (mid-IR) surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors and their applications, then we have the ideal opportunity for you. In fiber optics based SPR sensors, the penetration depth of the evanescent wave into the sample under investigation depends on the resonance wavelength. The longer the wavelength, the higher the penetration depth. However, current SPR sensors are limited to the visible wavelength region. This can be overcome by generating SPR in the mid-IR region with optical fibers and plasmonic materials suitable for this wavelength region. SRP in the mid-IR are ideal for a range of application such as for monitoring in real time dynamic changes taking place in living cells which is difficult to achieve in the visible wavelength region. In addition, mid-IR SPR sensors are expected to be biocompatible as Rayleigh scattering and photo-damage to the tissue in this wavelength region is reduced.
