1. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The Center for Synthetic Biology (Prof. M. De Mey) and the Laboratory of Immunology (Prof. B. Devriendt) welcome candidates for two PhD positions in the context of the interdisciplinary project ImmunoKeys: Merging immunology with synthetic biology to improve animal health: strain engineering for the production of structurally defined carbohydrates with immunomodulating properties. The continued spread of anti-microbial resistant bacterial pathogens together with a lag in the development of suitable antibiotic alternatives set the alarm bells ringing in public and animal health. The ImmunoKeys project brings together experts in synthetic biology and animal immunology to engineer microbial cell factories capable of producing structurally well-defined chitooligosaccharides with optimal immunostimulating properties via an integrated Design-Build-Test-Learn (DBTL) cycle. The obtained knowledge will lay the foundation for the development of these glycans as innovative alternatives for antibiotics in animal health.

4. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

You will work on REXPEK, a Strategic Basic Research project funded by Flanders Make. The project resides in the virtual commissioning paradigm where (near) first-time-right commissioning of machines is pursued by means of model based design approaches. The key idea is to determine optimal machine settings through virtual experiments. For this concept to work, the reality gap between the virtual and physical experiments needs to be minimized. Further, in order to reduce the remaining physical experiments, each attempt must be chosen so to yields as much information as possible. The project takes a unique angle to this problem by taking into account the human as a valuable resource both as a knowledge base, a performance sensor or critique as well as a discriminator between what could be good or bad settings. The project has the overall aim to develop new methodologies to assist operators with machine commissioning and real-time tuning.

5. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The CANOPI project is transdisciplinary and divided in five complementary work packages, each supported by one doctoral work. This position is relative to the first work package addressing the following question. “To what extent does and will climate, and specifically seasonal drought, shape tropical tree species distribution in Africa?” Using up-to-date modelling methods, you will identify the environmental determinants shaping the distribution of plant communities and produce floristic and functional maps of central African forests. You will explore the relationship between the distribution of species, communities, and forests and functional traits, specifically those related to drought-mitigation strategies. The determining role of leaf sheading, a major strategy to avoid desiccation, will be specifically explored. Part of the trait data have already been compiled for ~1000 tree species (leaf habit, maximum height, wood density) but additional measurements will be carried out to acquire new data on bark and wood traits. Finally, you will determine the vulnerability of species, communities and forest types under contrasting scenarios of climate change and anthropogenic threats, and identify areas that will experience major shifts in taxonomic and functional composition.

6. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The candidate will help collect forest inventory data (tree diameter and height) and species traits in nine clusters of existing plots distributed across the undersampled Democratic Republic of Congo and (possibly) Gabon. She/he will use forest inventory data to compare structural attributes (including stem density, basal area, average wood density and canopy height) among the plots and among the two regions (Atlantic forests of Gabon versus Inner Congo basin). This will shed light on the question whether inner Congo basin carbon stocks are truly lower than in other African regions. Forest remeasurement data will allow quantification of carbon gains and carbon losses between consecutive remeasurements (plots were remeasured every 2 to 4 years). This will ultimately allow quantifying the (dynamics of the) carbon sink over the 2010-2020 decade and address the question whether the inner Congo basin carbon sink is lower or higher than in other regions of central Africa. Finally, the longest monitored plots will allow tracking down changes in taxonomic and functional composition, addressing the question whether African forest species communities are truly shifting towards a higher share of drought-adapted species.

7. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The CANOPI project is transdisciplinary and divided in five complementary work packages, each supported by one doctoral work. This position is relative to the third work package addressing the following question. “How does seasonal drought affect the functioning of trees and forests in central Africa?” Using existing data from ongoing phenology surveys (tree crown observations) and in agreement/collaboration with the data owners, the selected candidate will determine the diversity of phenological strategies among tropical tree species in central Africa and identify the environmental drivers and long-term changes in phenology. The latter analyses will be based on the longer phenology records available. She/he will also develop innovative methodologies to monitor leaf loss in the canopy (through the implementation of phenological cameras) and relate canopy phenology to stem growth (using electronic dendrometers) in two key sites, Lope NP in Gabon and Luki Man and Biosphere Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

8. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The CANOPI project is transdisciplinary and divided into five complementary work packages, each supported by one doctoral work. This position is relative to the fourth work package addressing the following question: “Which drought mitigation strategies do African canopy tree species use?” You will focus on the relevance of two fascinating processes to canopy functioning in central Africa: (i) foliar water uptake, and (ii) bark photosynthesis. There is increasing evidence that these two processes may become especially important for maintaining the physiological activity in leaves and woody tissues of drought-stressed trees. We will specifically investigate these drought mitigation strategies using an ecophysiological approach that may set new standards in the functional ecology of tropical trees. The candidate will first review foliar water uptake (FWU) and bark photosynthesis as drought mitigation strategies. She/he will help developing a state-of-the-art measurement protocol to quantify FWU and bark photosynthesis using cut leaves, cut branches and intact plants. She/he will screen in situ the FWU capacity and bark photosynthesis potential of timber species in a nursery and plantations in Bambidie, Gabon. She/he will quantify leaf wetness in canopy trees with newly developed, custom-built sensors in Lopé and Luki.

9. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Context – High performant and power-dense electromechanical systems (e.g. weaving looms, compressors, gearboxes, drivetrains, …) need oil lubrication to reduce friction and resulting wear in rolling element bearings to efficiently dissipate heat from the contact points. On the one hand, these systems contain multiple oil-lubricated bearings of various types, which typically operate under different and/or varying conditions (load, speed, temperature). Ideally, the lubrication properties have been adapted to these operating conditions. However, in practice, each individual bearing operates under suboptimal lubrication conditions, leading globally to an increased Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) due to reduced energy efficiency, reduced component lifetime, and increased maintenance and downtime. At Ghent University, techniques are being developed to actively control and optimize the local lubricant thermomechanical properties in bearings, by means of in-situ thermal conditioning of the lubricant and the bearing surfaces, as well as control of mass flow rates. Your tasks – The envisioned Ph.D. focuses on the development and implementation of an active thermal control system in an existing bearing test rig with the aim of real-time control of lubrication. Besides the design and implementation of the hardware, also digital twin strategies must be developed acting as virtual sensors for control purposes.

12. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We imagine a future world of connected autonomously driving vehicles, AR/VR devices, smart clothing, cooperative robots in industry, or drones delivering packages at your doorstep. These applications are expected to be possible from novel techniques in wireless networking resulting into an increased spectrum, but also from the deep integration of the network with all types of computing power in the cloud and at the edge of the network. While all of this is possible in theory, many network control problems need to be solved under the hoods to make this possible: the topology consisting of all these different network segments must be discovered, routes must be found, and guarantees must be provided such that network communication can happen within (or less than) milliseconds. While already challenging on its own, this all must happen in a continuously changing environment, where people and devices move all the time. This gives rise to a wide number of optimization-related challenges in a highly distributed context. How to detect and utilize the best routes, highest capacity with lowest (and guaranteed) latencies between all those devices, and how to perform reservations within tight time boundaries.

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Sign languages are the primary form of communication for many deaf or hard of hearing people. They are also entirely separate languages, which are regional and have local variations, and generally have very little relation to any spoken languages in the same region. For example, Flemish Sign Language (used in Flanders) is quite different from Dutch Sign Language (used in the Netherlands), but very similar to the French Belgian Sign Language used in Wallonia (the French speaking part of Belgium). Without any connection between written languages and the natural language structure of their native sign language, and without the intermediate step of the (loose) connection between sounds and letter combinations, learning to read and write is much more challenging for people who are born deaf, than it is for hearing people to learn a different spoken/written language.

Given the rapid changes in climate, immense shifts in forest composition, functioning and carbon balance are expected in tropical forests in central Africa. However, no studies have confirmed this worrisome trend using ground-based data, keeping central Africa a particularly understudied region despite its overwhelming size. Whether tropical forests in central Africa will be sensitive to drier conditions –because they are already limited by water availability– or resistant –because they are adapted to seasonal drought– is the ambitious challenge CANOPI aims to tackle (https://www.canopi.uliege.be/).

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Our research group currently is involved in research projects in the energy domain, including mostly smart grid applications. The focus of our AI4E team in these projects is on data analytics, as well as coordination algorithms for, e.g., demand response. A major objective of the applications we want to support is to accommodate large penetration of renewable sources (wind mills, solar panels, etc.) without requiring excessive investments in the power grid infrastructure. This involves characterizing and eventually predicting both power generation (from renewables) and consumption behavior (and its flexibility, e.g., what portion thereof can be shifted in time), using data analytics techniques, constructing generative models, applying machine learning, etc. The next step is to actively control power consumption, e.g., by developing algorithms for energy management systems (to steer power consumption and/or decide what to use local production for, e.g., push into the grid or local storage).

25. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Trustworthy machine learning (ML) systems should be able to express their uncertainty about the predictions they make, i.e., they should know what they don’t know. However, complex ML methods, such as deep neural networks, often fail to express their uncertainty in an honest way. This is a crucial problem in application domains such as medicine, climate and biology, because ML systems can only assist end users if one can trust the ML systems. In this PhD project we intend to develop and evaluate several ML methodologies to quantify uncertainty. We want to explore four different ways of quantifying uncertainty, resulting in four different tasks. The first two approaches, in which distributions or sets are used to express uncertainty, respectively, are commonly used in supervised learning. Those approaches typically only take aleatoric uncertainty into account, i.e., uncertainty that cannot be reduced by collecting data of more patients. The last two approaches, which express a second-order uncertainty via distributions of distributions or sets of distributions, are less established in supervised learning. However, those approaches are gaining popularity, because they are able to represent epistemic uncertainty as well, i.e., uncertainty that arises because of working with limited sample sizes, and that can be reduced by collecting more data.

27. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We are heading towards a hybrid society, where AI-enabled agents cooperate with humans in a variety of tasks. Human decision making is however notably prone to cognitive biases. In applications supporting the human, the integrated AI should account for these biases when making suggestions or taking actions. Within the context of a prestigious European FET-OPEN collaborative project (ChronoPilot), the Phd study recruited for this position will design a computational model that generates multi-modal (audio, video, haptic) stimuli via XR technology to resolve the differences in individual time perception during group tasks. The perception of time is a critical component of a large range of human activities. In particular, when individuals have to make decisions and consider the outcomes associated with their choices. Nevertheless, humans perceive durations mostly subjectively. Sometimes time flies, whereas at other moments, time feels expanded, depending on the individual’s environment, the task at hand, the allocation of the individual’s attention, etc. This subjective judgment of durations influences the optimality of human decisions, well-being, performance, etc. While the focus of this position is on the computational modelling using AI techniques, the researcher will closely collaborate with researchers from other disciplines.

30. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Thermo-Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication (TEHL) is a specific lubrication regime that typically occurs in classic machine components such as rolling element bearings, gears, cam-follower systems, etc., and is therefore very relevant in many machine applications. TEHL is characterized by thin lubricant films (50 nm-1 m) in which the hydrodynamic pressure can reach values up to GPa range (1-4 GPa), inducing elastic deformation of the opposing contact surfaces in the order of the film thickness. At such high pressures, the lubricant becomes compressible and behaves in a highly non-Newtonian way by local solidification and shear-thinning. Accurate computational simulation of TEHL by means of continuum models requires therefore an accurate description of the lubricant’s compressibility and the rheology (i.e. piezo-viscosity and shear thinning) as well as the thermal properties (specific heat, conductivity), wall slip and cavitation. Today, however, the thermomechanical properties of only a handful of “academic” lubricant oils have been measured experimentally and documented in the literature, due to the technical challenges of performing experiments at extreme pressures and shear rates. Hence, typically data is limited to 1.5GPa.

34. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Advances in TeraHertz technology have driven researchers to consider systems that are highly non-linear and strongly radiating. Modelling these systems requires methods that are based on time-stepping, and that can accurately describe unbounded regions. The use of methods such as the finite element method, the method of moments, or the finite difference time-domain method – if at all applicable – results in unacceptable computational costs, and large errors in dispersion and radiation characteristics. The right tool to model this class of devices is the time domain boundary element method. Unfortunately a number of challenges remain, stopping designers from deploying time domain boundary element methods in the modelling of realistic devices and systems. The ERC Consolidator project BET3D will accelerate the development of the time-domain boundary element method into a method that can model highly non-linear, strongly radiating systems and that unlocks the capability to model emerging technologies in THz communications and imaging. In this project, we will develop novel modelling methodologies that allow the integrated simulation of complex sensors made from multiple materials, and including ports, coatings, and two-dimensional materials such as graphene. We will pursue transformational advancements in the formulation, discretization, and implementation of the time domain boundary element method.

37. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The Laboratory of Protistology and Aquatic Ecology (Ghent University) and Comparative Network Biology group (VIB) invite applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship for 1 year and extended with another 3 years (after positive evaluation) to study diatom speciation and adaptation. Our understanding the processes underlying speciation and the genetic/phenotypic diversity of diatoms and other microalgae remains very limited, yet it is of crucial importance to predict their response to global change. The successful applicant will employ a combination of field, laboratory and population-genomic approaches to quantify gene flow in diatom metapopulations, to study local adaptation and to reconstruct the impact of past and ongoing gene flow on the evolution of their pan-genome. We offer an intellectually stimulating and international research environment, high-quality training to develop hard and soft skills, opportunities to participate in sampling campaigns and international scientific conferences, and a competitive salary including a bicycle commuting reimbursement. Ghent University is among the top global universities according to several international rankings.

39. Doctoral Position

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The selection and presence of the right person has become significantly important since today’s knowledge society supports the specialization of personnel and the development of additional skills to improve the satisfactory execution of activities. To support workers with the processing of tasks in a production environment, we analyze the cost benefits resulting from different forms of training such as self-learning (and forgetting), on-the-job training and off-the-job training to re-skill the workforce. Each of these types of training is characterized by (i) a different degree of learning impacting the efficiency and/or quality a worker can process tasks, known as the up-skilling consequences, (ii) a training duration during which workers cannot process other tasks, and (iii) a training cost.
