1. Postdoctoral Fellow (m/f/d) | C. elegans Genetics and Molecular Biology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We recently discovered a new form of genetic compensation that we have termed transcriptional adaptation. Briefly, transcriptional adaptation occurs when a mutation leads to mutant mRNA degradation. The degradation fragments in turn modulate the expression of ‘related’ genes, and consequently varying degrees of phenotypic rescue in some cases. We have observed this phenomenon in zebrafish and C. elegans as well as in mouse and human cells in culture. This is a novel and quickly developing field of research where many open questions remain to be addressed including 1) the nature and trafficking of the degradation fragments, 2) the regulation of related genes by the degradation fragments, or their derivatives, and 3) the response of terminally differentiated cells to the degradation fragments.

3. Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) | Biogeochemistry

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This position will support the European Research Council Starting Grant (ERC StG) project ForExD “Forest vulnerability to compound extremes and disturbances in a changing climate” and is primarily assigned to the Climate-Ecosystem Disturbances Interactions working group, where interactions between climate change, extreme events and vegetation dynamics, using Earth observations and process-based models, are investigated. This project will use deep learning methods for spatio-temporal data classification, e.g. computer vision techniques, to classify forest disturbance signals in remote-sensing data to specific agents (fires, insects, storms). This will contribute to develop a remote-sensing based reconstruction of forest disturbance in the past decades and improve understanding of forest disturbance regimes.

4. Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) | Biochemical and Structural Analyses of Epigenetic Complexes

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The histone acetyltransferase MOF can associate with two complexes: the NSL complex and the MSL complex. Each of these complexes is an important and conserved epigenetic regulator with distinct gene targets. We are interested in using biochemical techniques to gain mechanistic insights into their function, including understanding how the individual components of the complexes interact with each other and how they choose their cromatin target. Our past work provided pioneering structural characterization of the NSL and MSL complexes. Our crystal structures of mouse MSL1 with MOF and MSL3 as well as of MSL1 with MSL2 have proven invaluable in pinpointing essential amino acids at interaction interfaces within the MSL complex.

5. Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) | Epigenetic Regulation of Cell Decisions in Mammals

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Akhtar lab uses a combination of mouse and human models to investigate the mechanistic and physiological functions of the H4K16-specific histone acetyltransferase MOF/KAT8 and its associated protein complexes in mammals. The lab has a long-standing interest in understanding the cell- and tissue-specific functions of MOF at both molecular and physiological levels, including dissecting how MOF influences cell fate and development decisions. The recruited postdoc will contribute towards this line of research by studying MOF in one or more tissues of interest.

7. Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) | Drosophila Dosage Compensation

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Sex-chromosome dosage compensation is one of the most fascinating problems in biology. Females carry two X chromosomes, while males only have one. Despite this imbalance, males and females express X-linked genes at roughly equal levels. How is the correct dosage of X-linked genes achieved? In flies, the single X chromosome is coated by the male-specific lethal (MSL) complex harbouring the histone acetyltransferase MOF which specifically hyperacetylates histone H4 al lysine 16 (H4K16ac), thereby triggering transcriptional upregulation of X-linked genes by approximately two-fold. Our latest research revealed that the long non-coding RNA component roX2 helps the MSL complex to achieve its exquisite specificity for the X chromosome by forming a stable phase-separated hydrogel with the protein component MSL2.

9. Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) | Electrochemical Ammonia Oxidation

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Haber-Bosch process uses elevated pressures, temperatures and iron-containing catalysts to fixate nitrogen with the help of hydrogen into NH3 – the key ingredient of fertilizers, transferring nitrogen from the air into our soils. If the required H2 is produced from water electrolysis, ammonia expands its role from being a chemical carrier of nitrogen to transporting and storing green hydrogen. Reversing the Haber-Bosch process, the hydrogen could then be released from NH3 sustainably via ammonia fuel cells. However, NH3 is also a key ingredient for the industrial production of various chemicals. So far, no larger efforts have been undertaken to use the electrochemical ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) for direct and sustainable conversion of NH3 into feedstocks for the chemical industry.

21. Postdoctoral Fellow (m/f/d) | Biosensor Engineering

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The research group Tools for Bio-Imaging at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology is looking to hire a post-doctoral fellow (m/f/d) with an interest in biophysics, structural and molecular biology, protein engineering, and, more generally, in tool development and neuroscience.
