The PFF group is a global leader for tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particle fuel research for high temperature gas-cooled reactors and is focused on driving innovation in coated particle fuel technologies for established and emerging nuclear technologies (e.g., space nuclear propulsion). The PFF group supports activities related to both fabrication and post-irradiation examination of coated particle fuel and fuel forms. This position would support characterization and property evaluation of coated particles and integral fuel forms in support of DOE funded programs and industry engagement. Efforts would be primarily in the Coated Particle Fuel Development Laboratory (CPFDL) which houses a suite of capabilities dedicated to coated particle research and development. This includes capabilities such as fluidized bed chemical vapor deposition (FBCVD), porosimetry, ceramography, among others. The primary role of this position is applying and adapting characterization and property evaluation approaches such as, but not limited to density, thermal properties, optical imaging, x-ray radiography/tomography and electron microscopy, to support TRISO fuel and integral fuel fabrication efforts. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Advanced Composites Manufacturing Group in the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in advanced composite manufacturing with expertise in polymer processing, and mold/part designs related to composite materials with relevant experience in an industrial manufacturing setting. The candidate will conduct research on: (1) plastic and composite part design and optimization, (2) design and manufacturing of advanced tooling for composite manufacturing, (3) processing of novel composite systems using a variety of methods, such as injection molding, extrusion processes, compression molding, additive manufacturing, etc., and (4) develop smart manufacturing platforms for composites manufacturing through automation/sensor integration and application of advanced data analytic techniques. The candidate will be expected to simultaneously execute multiple projects, contribute to development of new initiatives in their area, interact with ORNL staff, industry, and academic partners.
