1. Doctoral student in High-speed datacenter networking

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Today’s cloud and edge datacenters struggle to keep the pace of multi-100Gbps network interface card. A CPU transmitting 40Gbps of traffic consumes as much as 70% of its cycles, which cannot be used to run any applications. The recent rise of programmable high-speed hardware devices including P4 switches and SmartNICs have opened the door to massive potential performance gains by offloading networking stacks from CPUs to hardware. Yet, reaping the benefits of such devices is today a largely unsolved problems. For example, multi-terabit per second network devices drop packets depending on specific time patterns. In this project, we plan to devise a language that can be used to decompose network programs into per-device configuration in a way that allows operators to reason about the performance of the network.

3. Doctoral student in cybersecurity: Threat modeling and analysis

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Society’s critical infrastructure (the electric power system, telecommunications, water distribution, etc.) are to a large extent controlled by industrial IT systems. It is important to protect these systems from attacks from malicious actors. A Security Operations Centers (SOC), which collects large amounts of data generated by the industrial IT systems in order to detect, respond to, or to alert human operators of the presence of cyber attacks, may act as an important defense. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to in real-time detect cyber intrusions, to respond to security incidents, to hunt for threats in the environment and to gather threat intelligence. This presents a number of exciting research challenges to automate such tasks and by this improving SOC capabilities. We do this by applying a combination of security threat modeling, machine learning, and data mining.

11. Doctoral student in resilient future power grids

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Future power systems are expected to have high penetration of renewables, energy storage, smart home prosumers with electrical cars and household appliances. As complexity of the power system increases and the digitalisation of the energy system is progressing, the frequency of unexpected events will increase at the same time as the inertia in the system is shrinking, making it more sensitive to disruptions with less time to act. This makes the energy system vulnerable for cyber and physical attacks, which are likely to increase. Improving security of energy infrastructure and resilience is therefore crucial for the functionality of our societies.

26. Doctoral student in simulations of wetting of complex fluids droplets

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Viscoelastic fluids flow through porous media is crucial for natural and industrial processes: medical filtration such as face masks (mucus), cleaning of contaminated surfaces, recovery of groundwater, oil and materials in geologically challenging locatilocations, CO2 sequestration for climate change, pharmaceutical technologies and human body tissues. These complex fluids flow in a very different way to Newtonian fluids such as water. Transport in porous media is dramatically affected by flow instabilities in microscale, improving mixing and propagation; yet, instabilities of complex fluids remain a challenge. This proposal will result in completely new understanding of viscoelastic fluids flow through porous media by fluid flow simulations using high-fidelity computation methods recently developed by the group.
