Norway has about 130 Ferry connections, and they transport each year about 20 million vehicles and 40 million people. The ferry connections are critical components of the transport infrastructure, and any loss of service has economical, social and safety- impact on the society. Ferry quays consists of two primary structural components, the ferry slip and the surrounding quay structure. The ferry quays are subject to complex loading scenarios over their service life that are influenced by environmental conditions, traffic, frequency of ferry arrivals, ferry operation and type/size of ferry. The quays are also frequently subject to structural damage and the forces acting on the ferry dock during docking operations are uncertain. Summary of Doctoral Project:

The PhD student will work on the project “Stratification of cancer patients for ultrasound-mediated chemotherapy” funded by the The Central Norway Regional Health Authority. Ultrasound focused on tumours in combination with microbubbles injected in the blood is reported to improve the uptake of drugs in tumours and improve the therapeutic response. The project also includes preclinical studies in mice, analysing tumours growing in mice for potential biomarkers.

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In models of complex and large-scale physical systems, the number of variables in the mathematical description of the system might be overly large, thereby requiring a large computational budget for performing simulations and sensitivity analysis of key system performance indicators. Although the simulation of such systems may be feasible, optimizing their design or operation might be challenging, especially in the presence of uncertainty and when system derivatives are not trusted. In such cases, data-driven optimization methods which do not require derivative information are often a practical alternative to seek ways to improve production and design strategies effectively. The focus of the project will be on handling uncertainty and making use of process data in derivative-free optimization. The uncertainty typically comes from incomplete information about the system, mismatches between the actual process and corresponding models, and measurement noise. The project is a part of BRU21, the Research and Innovation Program in Digital and Automation Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry, and the application domain within the project is field development optimization in the petroleum industry. However, the optimization techniques developed will apply to a wide range of applications, for instance energy systems.

With motivation to avoid sea-lice contamination and reducing the environmental footprint of fish farming, closed fish containment systems (closed cages) have been developed and installed at several locations in Norway. Although most relevant for sheltered locations, wave and current exposure must still be considered.
