20. Doctoral candidate (PhD student) in the field of contemporary history/history of technology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Historical scholarship has only recently started to investigate the period “after the boom”. Western societies have experienced dramatic economic, societal and cultural changes since the industrial crisis of the 1970s and the following massive deindustrialization. In 1975, Luxembourg was hit by the steel crisis and the country’s largest employer, the steel company ARBED, threatened to cut back production and jobs at large. In the following decades, the country was oscillating between the management of industrial decline and a new boom in finance and service economy. The envisioned project will take Esch-Belval as a point of departure. The former iron and steel works, built in 1909/11, largely refurbished and expanded after the Second World War, was partly closed in the late 1990s and transformed into a new urban district. Today, it hosts the campus of the University of Luxembourg. The project will investigate the structural change in the country since the steel crisis, taking the entangled regional, national and transnational developments into its focus. The project will collaborate with the research group “Confronting Decline: Challenges of Deindustrialization in Western Societies since the 1970s” (CONDE) at the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History (IfZ) in Munich. Joint workshops and conferences are planned.

30. PhD candidate in Integrated Sensing and Communications for Emerging Wireless Networks

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This project will focus on design, optimization and adaptation of a joint radar communication system for the high bandwidth high mobility scenarios. Works on an unified waveform for radar and communications is in its infancy, let alone for high mobility networks. A first research challenge, lies in determining the suitable optimization metric (Mean Square Error, Signal to Noise Ratio, Detection probability etc.). Challenges also arise in determining a parametric model for waveforms that can be used for different flavors of MIMO radar and deriving update methods (or optimizing) for the parameters in the presence of high-mobility leading to poor coherence times.

31. PhD candidate in Machine Learning at the edge of the Smart Grid

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In this PhD thesis, the focus is on ML task offloading and resource allocation strategy under Fog-Cloud hybrid systems. More concretely, the research carried out in this thesis investigates how a given ML task can be divided into sub-tasks, and how those sub-tasks can be dynamically allocated between Cloud and Edge nodes under the multiple constraints of networking, security, computing power and energy consumption. This is known as a cost minimization problem under edge and cloud resource constraints, which is recognized as NP-hard [Ya18]. Federated and/or multi-task learning techniques will likely be considered in this respect, as they offer interesting features for task subdivision possibilities. The proposed ML task offloading strategy will be implemented and evaluated based on use case scenario defined in the (renewable) energy sector. The overall idea is to deploy the algorithm on nanogrid controllers that are limited in terms of computational capacity, memory and storage, which have to forecast future parameters such as anticipated energy demands and renewable generation outputs (e.g., predicted PV production).

The PhD candidate will contribute to the C21 programme (see details below) by developing and designing hybrid solutions (combining the design of the physical collaboration space with the digital space) for monitoring collaborative experiences and stimulating supportive actions to ensure the quality of the collaboration. The candidate will 1) help defining collaboration experience metrics, 2) develop one or multiple prototypes, integrating sensing solutions to monitor or inform the collaboration dynamics in real-time. By triangulating behavioral, contextual sensor data and self-reported data, we can inform research on factors playing a role in collaborative processes and 3) design an interface, interactive object or interactive space that feeds back information to the collaborators to support positive and productive collaborative experience. An interesting perspective here is data physicalization (physical artefacts whose material properties and aesthetics encode data).

41. PhD candidate in metacognition in radar

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The radar team at SIGCOM group in SnT is pursuing research on radar signal processing in partnership with national and international academic and industrial collaborators. An interesting research avenue is Beyond Cognitive Radar where in the concept of metacognition is being increasingly considered. In a fully-funded project on learning to learn, the SIGCOM research group will focus on the radar signal processing, cognitive frameworks and their selection in a metacognitive framework. It is in a unique position towards realizing the objectives of the project having exposure to the different elements through ongoing collaborative research projects, industry exposure and test-bench development activity. During the past two decades, enabling cognition in radar has heralded a new era of radar system design and engineering. Cognitive radars (CRs), offer advanced sensing capabilities by simultaneously optimizing both transmit and receive processing in response to the changes in the target environment. In general, a cognitive radar is designed to apply a single specific framework or algorithm to achieve its desired performance based on a pre-determined criteria.

44. Doctoral researcher (PhD student) focusing on the development of biomolecular extraction techniques for meta-omics high-throughput experiments

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Despite ongoing efforts to increase the percentage of renewable energy resources, hydrocarbons will remain an important energy source for several decades. One of the key factors to reach EU’s ambitious goals in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is the replacement of coal by other energy sources, mainly natural gas. Additionally, increasing global competition for resources and rising energy prices as well as price differentials between the European Union and its competitors requires energy which is sustainable, affordable and with a secure and reliable supply. Exploration for new resources within the EU are a key factor for reaching these goals. In the EU-funded FET project PROSPECTOMICS, we aim to meet these challenges by paving the way for completely novel approaches to hydrocarbon prospecting. The project will use a meta-omics (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metaproteomics) approach in combination with Geochemistry, Microbiology, and Machine Learning to achieve this aim.
