1. PhD position: computational analysis of stem cell production in bioreactors

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Blood is essential for oxygen transport, wound healing, and defence against pathogens. Short-lived mature blood cells are constantly replenished by hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) throughout life. For many blood-related ailments, blood transfusion is often the only therapeutic option, and stem cell transplantation the only curative treatment for severe anemias. Unfortunately, a lack of immune-matched cells often hampers these therapies. The TRACER consortium works on studying disease mechanisms as well as the production of mature bloodcells/HSCs from gene-corrected induced pleuripotent stem-cells for therapeutic purposes. The team at TU Delft will focus on development of bioreactor technology for reliable high-density, low cost stem cell production for blood transfusion and curative applications. The team will consist of two PhD students, of which the current vacancy focuses on process modeling and simulation, whereas the prospective colleague will work on experimental cultivation and process monitoring/control. 2. PhD position in membraneless water electrolysis 

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The goal will be to create, test, and optimize membraneless electrolyzer systems that allow high flow velocities and energy efficiencies. Studying the complex interaction between dissolved hydrogen, bubbles, and high liquid velocities will be an important point of investigation. The transport of dissolved gas and bubbles will be studied through optical and electrochemical means. Besides these scientific aspects, engineering aspects like effective gas-liquid separator design will also play a role. 4. PhD in Smart Control of Turbulence for Sustainable Aviation

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In collaboration with industry, TU Delft has recently started the Turbulence Task Force project. This task force will identify, validate, and prepare for industrial implementation, the most promising and commercially attractive technology for the reduction of turbulent drag in aviation. Within the task force, this PhD project is concerned with the manipulation of the turbulent fluid layer adjacent to the surface, particularly from the perspective of active (flow) control. This implies that the evolving turbulence needs to be manipulated with a wall-based sensing and actuation system with the aim to learn (1) which instantaneous features of the turbulent flow are most receptive to control, and (2) which controlled features result in the greatest performance gain and why. To address these challenges, control techniques, such as extremum-seeking control in multi-input/output systems, possibly combined with real-time implementations of other machine learning methods, are a promising way forward. The work will be mainly experimentally using state-of-the-art (optical) measurements techniques and flow facilities.

7. Computational materials modelling for space

Summary of Doctoral Project:

1 PhD position is available under the QAIMS (Quantum-enhanced Artificial Intelligence for sustainable Materials and Structural design in aerospace) lab of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of TU Delft. It falls in the exciting interdisciplinary area of Machine Learning (ML), Quantum Computing (QC), and computational materials modelling. When energetic particles interact with materials in space environment, they can cause defects and resultant property degradation. Classical ab initio density functional theory calculations are limited by small scale and short time whereas classical molecular dynamics are limited by insufficient accuracy. Wind energy is set to be a major contributor to the decarbonisation of the energy sector. Offshore wind farms are being built without subsidy, but successful offer prices are predicted to further reduce cost. 14. PhD: Dynamics of proteins in cell nuclei studied by super-resolution microscopy

In order to keep human bodies healthy, cells have to continuously adjust to stress, such as DNA damage, nutrient deficiency and mechanical stress. Recently, the lamin family of cytoskeletal proteins have emerged as a key regulator of cell response to intrinsic and environmental stimuli. Lamins are the main architectural proteins of the nucleus and form a fibrous, highly stable meshwork underlying the inner nuclear membrane. The cell’s stress response triggers one of the lamin types, prelamin A, to accumulate, which affects important cellular processes such as cell cycle progression, DNA-replication, chromatin remodeling and senescence. Fundamental knowledge on the lamin-dependent regulatory mechanism that controls DNA replication, and replication fork stalling leading to cell senescence, is still lacking. DNA replication is a process fundamental to all life, and lamins have been found to regulate DNA replication through local chromosome compaction and direct interaction with the replication proteins. Furthermore, during S phase, the nucleoplasmic distribution of lamins changes with altering patterns of DNA replication.

Discrete-event systems form a large class of dynamic systems in which the evolution of the system is driven by the occurrence of certain discrete events. 31. PhD Position Optical Methodologies for Protein Sequencing

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Genome sequencing has become a standard technology in biomedical research. The technique is used to diagnose inherited diseases, target treatments, and identify health risks. Certain gene variants can increase a person’s risk of diseases such as cancer and heart conditions. This technology makes use of innovative reagents, in combination with an optical microscope. A major drawback of this technology is that it only reveals the genetic baseline of biological processes. The ability to measure the make-up of not only the genome but of proteins and protein expression, would create an enormous scientific opportunity as proteins are at the basis of all biological processes. We envision the realization of such protein sequencing methodology by building on recent developments in super-resolution microscopy. Super-resolution microscopy allows for circumventing the diffraction limit, to visualize otherwise invisible details within the cell. In this PhD project we will develop a framework for multi-agent learning aimed at cooperative control of a group of autonomous systems. The transformation of our energy systems from fossil fuel-based to renable-based systems is calling for innovative solutions to harvest renewable energies at land, at sea and in space. Very flexible floating structures (VFFS) have been proposed to unlock the full potential of offshore floating photovoltaics. VFFS follow the wave elevation and allow for large structural deflections. 35. PhD Position Design of new flatfish stimulation devices

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Fisheries targeting sole and plaice typically use heavy tickler chains dragged through the sediment to startle and catch the fish. This technique results in (1) low catch selectivity with high bycatch, (2) high fuel costs owing to high drag, and (3) severe environmental impact (bottom disturbance, CO2 production, and release of pollutants). Therefore, a better fishing technique without tickler chains is required. Supported by the Applied and Engineering Sciences of NWO (the Netherlands Science Foundation), Wageningen University, Wageningen Marine Research, and Delft University of Technology aim to develop new catching techniques that are more efficient with a reduced environmental impact. 36. PhD Position Data-driven identification and control of hydrodynamically coupled floating structures

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Offshore wind farms, wave-energy converter arrays, and maneuvering ship convoys all involve hydrodynamically-coupled systems of multiple floating structures. The flow around each structure produces an unsteady wake that can impact neighboring structures, and cause force and kinematic fluctuations. These interactions may reduce operational efficiency, induce fatigue loading and thus maintenance costs, and can even lead to system failure. 38. PhD Position CFD and lumped modelling of fluidized bed waste gasification

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The PhD project ‘’Modelling and experimental validation of HTW bubbling fluidized bed gasification’’ is a collaboration between GIDARA Energy and TU Delft. Aim of the gasification process is to generate a syngas which, after cleanup and upgrading, will be suitable for fossil-free methanol production. The goal of this project is to arrive at a simple transient one-dimensional model for the gasifier at GIDARA Energy, with the ability to predict the residence time distribution of gas/solids, the (axial) temperature distribution, and the chemical conversion and selectivity to various products. Focus lies on a research-scale bubbling fluidized bed gasifier operating with solid waste feedstock, e.g. sewage, wood, household and industrial types of solid waste. This PhD aims at bridging this gap theoretically and empirically, using the Netherlands as a case study. From the pool of existing explanations of economic inequality and urban segregation (such as: assortative mating, selective migration, urban form, contextual effects etc.), which are the most relevant ones to explain economic segregation in cities in general, and in Dutch cities in particular? In 2016 Breakthrough Prize Foundation announced a $100 million initiative to realize microchip satellite for unmanned interstellar travel. By attaching these microchips to low-mass sails which are meters large and only nanometers thick, these satellites could be accelerated to ultra-fast speeds with lasers. This type of sail material would allow us to shorten times to Alpha Centauri, our nearest star, from 10,000 years to only 20 years – completely changing humanity’s reach within the universe. 41. PhD position on hematopoietic stem cell cultivation in a bioreactor

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This project is part of a consortium that aims to unravel hereditary anemias using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for the purpose of gaining more fundamental knowledge and novel therapies. This consortium focuses on hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Mature blood cells are continuously replenished by HSCs to make sure that essential mechanisms remain functional, such as oxygen tranport and defence again pathogens. Currently fouling is the major obstacle that hinders the long-term operation and wide-spread utilisation of membranes in various applications.
