Scholarship Coverage

The typical financing cycle lasts for two years. PhD candidates who have been granted unconditional admission to doctorate study at a German institution are awarded a €1.200 per month subsidy. We provide our scholars with a number of subsidies in addition to the monthly stipend. We provide financial assistance for health insurance up to a monthly maximum of €120 upon request. If you and your spouse reside together in one location in Germany for at least three months and if his or her salary does not exceed € 450 per month, we additionally give a family allowance of € 276. For kids residing with you in Germany, we also provide a children’s stipend of € 194 per month. The formal submission of a German translation of the child’s birth certificate as well as the official denial of your request for a public child allowance are prerequisites.

PhD scholars can also seek for financial support for travel for research purposes. We do not, however, provide funding for congress or symposium attendance.

Up to €1.500 each semester, tuition fees for university courses in Germany that are directly relevant to your studies may be returned. We do not, however, reimburse standard semester costs for enrollment or re-registration each year.

Eligibility Criteria

How to Apply for Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarship 2024?

Two methods exist for applying to our scholarship programme:

1) For our selection processes, new focal nations or areas are chosen every year. We will conduct interviews online in 2021 with an emphasis on Latin America (organised through our office in Peru), Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, and the Middle East. If you reside in one of these nations, you may send your written application to the relevant KAS office directly; please consult their websites for the precise process and addresses. Students residing in non-listed nations are not eligible to apply for the 2021 international selection process.

2) You are welcome to apply for a scholarship through the domestic selection programme using our online process if you are currently residing in or attending school in Germany. Please complete the online application form and upload all necessary application materials. Please don’t mail any documents since they won’t be accepted. Every year on July 15th at 12:00 noon, the domestic procedural application period closes.

  • A meaningful CV in tabular form including details about your previous voluntary work or social commitment.
  • Motivation letter.
  • Copies of your examination certificates in German translation if the originals are not in English.
  • Copies of your studies performance records if you have been studying at a University in Germany.
  • Proof of German language skills (B 2).
  • An informal academic letter of recommendation: This letter should provide information about your academic qualifications and potential; it should not be older than two month. The author has to be a university professor or teacher holding a doctoral degree.
  • An informal letter of recommendation concerning the applicant’s personality: This letter should focus on your personality and interests as well as on your understanding of values and your social commitment. The author cannot be the same as the one providing the academic letter of recommendation.
  • Certificate of admission or matriculation from your university in Germany.

An explanation of your PhD thesis in detail: This exposé should summarise the main research issue of your proposed project, its scientific significance, your theoretical approach, and the reasons behind your choice of the study subject. It should be written in German or English and should be 5–10 pages long with 1.5 line spacing and font size 12. A work schedule, a timetable of events, and a bibliography should also be included.

A second letter of recommendation from a professor: If you already have a PhD thesis supervisor, they should be the ones to write this second letter. It takes the place of the applicant’s personality recommendation letter.

FAQ About Scholarship

When can I apply for a scholarship?

In the study and doctoral grants on January 15 and July 15 of each year. In the promotion of foreign nationals and JONA only on July 15th.

Should I submit my documents in paper form? 

No, please only submit your documents digitally at first. If, in individual cases, documents are required in paper form, we will contact you directly. 

By when should/must I submit the reports?

No later than January 31 or July 31 of each year, depending on the relevant application date. Exception: In the case of doctoral funding, the reports must be submitted by the application deadline (January 15 or July 15).

How should the reports be sent?

You upload the reports directly via the portal. We cannot consider reports received by post or e-mail.

Can several expert opinions be submitted?

Yes, but we ask that you limit the number to a maximum of two university teacher/specialist teacher reports.

Can I apply again after being rejected?

No. After a rejection on our part, it is not possible to apply again at a later date.

Are the examination/study regulations required?

Yes. Please only submit the passage that shows the standard period of study for your course.

In what form should the university certificates/evidence of achievement provided so far be submitted?

Please send us a performance overview. Only submit individual certificates in cases in which evidence was not recorded by the overview.

Can students of a dual or extra-occupational course apply?

Dual degree programs can be funded if the degree is completed full-time at a state or state-recognized university. The latter must be proven with the help of the enrollment certificate. Part-time courses cannot be funded.

Can part-time students apply?

No; certain dual study programs are an exception (see above).

Do bachelor’s and consecutive master’s degrees count as one course?

Yes.

Do you only support certain subjects or topics?

There are no restrictions on topics and subjects. Exception: Doctorates in medicine or dentistry are not funded.

How do I design my CV?

In your CV (three to five pages, with date), tell us what shaped you, what academic and professional goals you have, what you are committed to and what your interests are.

Can I complete my doctorate abroad? Are tuition fees covered?

In justified individual cases, doctorates in other EU countries, Great Britain and Switzerland are funded at domestic conditions. No other fees will be accepted.

When does the financial support start?

Usually no later than three months after the end of the selection process.

Can I only receive non-material or only financial support?

No.

Can I do a part-time job? Will other income be taken into account?
