7. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

IRES is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with established research expertise and skills in remote sensing of forest data; knowledge of the academic debates on threats to Russian boreal forests, and Russian language skills are desirable. Russian forests comprise nearly 20% of the world’s forests and are widely understood to be an important future carbon sink of a warming planet. While social and climate scientists have advanced knowledge on current and future threats to boreal forests – forest fires, illegal logging and newly emerging pathogens and pests – much less is known about the governance mechanisms and civil society involvements that respond to these threats. IRES is interested in forming an interdisciplinary network of scholars who conduct research that in broadly addresses governance and politics of boreal forest in Russia.

16. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The research area of the postdoctoral project is organic photochemistry, with a focus on the fundamental aspects of aromaticity and antiaromaticity in electronically excited states. This research involves qualitative electronic structure theory, quantum chemical computations, and experimental investigations within the research group as well as in collaborations. The excited state aromaticity and antiaromaticity area has grown significantly in recent years, yet, at the same time it has become gradually more clear that the limitations, complications and pitfalls need to be mapped out more comprehensively if the concepts are to be used properly in various applications. The focus of the postdoctoral project will be to explore the different types of excited state (anti)aromaticity that exist and to assess to what extent they apply to various electronically excited states. Competing phenomena that influence the excited state properties of molecules should also be explored. The project will suit a person who wants to dwell into electronic structure related properties of molecules without any immediate application in mind.

19. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Polyploidization, the increase in genome size caused by the inheritance of an additional set (or sets) of chromosomes is a major force in evolution. Allopolyploidy corresponds to two processes altering fundamentally the hereditary material: whole genome duplication (WGD) and hybridization. Transition to allopolyploidy is also often accompanied by a mating system shift, from outcrossing to selfing. Three major transitions at once seem a tall order. Yet, our recent genomic studies in natural sheperd’s purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) as well as with resynthetized allopolyploids, together with studies in other allopolyploid species, have demonstrated the absence of genomic shocks. Instead, there is a strong parental legacy and a gradual evolution of both alloploidy and the selfing syndrome.
