9. Postdoctoral Scholar, Child Health Indicators and Service Delivery, School of Public Policy and Cumming School of Medicine
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Children can experience vulnerabilities and resiliency factors (biologic or environmental) in their developmental trajectory that impact their well-being. Cross-ministry policy and services have an important role in improving health and well-being outcomes; however, the current Alberta child and youth services sector lacks strategy and links between development trajectories, environmental factors and child health and well-being. Indicators can help simplify the complex information concerning the child health and well-being, environment and policy nexus by identifying modifiable factors that impact child health and wellness. These indicators can then be used to turn population data into relevant information for decision-makers and the public. Currently, Alberta does not have indicators of child health and well-being. This position focuses on addressing this gap by developing indicators through a systematic consensus process and identifying evidence-based policies and prevention strategies to improve child health and well-being.

10. Post Doctoral Associate in Linguistics, School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
fDifferent types of nominals, proper names, descriptions, and pronouns, are used to perform different acts of reference – naming, describing and reference tracking. Since acts of reference are dependent on both the speaker’s and the addressee’s relation to the referent, researchers have concluded that reference is a collaborative act. And in fact, there are parts of speech and intonational tunes dedicated to managing this collaborative act. This project explores the universal and language-specific properties of different acts of reference. Our project is informed by three different strands of research in linguistics and philosophy of language. First, beginning with Austin’s 1962 seminal work, speech act theory has established that when we utter different types of sentences, we perform different speech acts, including asserting, questioning, requesting, promising, etc. Second, since the 1970s syntacticians have explored different ways to incorporate speech act meaning into their formal representations of sentence structure.
