26. Postdoctoral Researcher in the role of the intestine in cardiometabolic disease

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Cardiometabolic disease is to a large part underlying the vast increase in non-communicable diseases observed in recent years; particularly relevant for the current project are the components obesity, insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)/steatohepatitis (NASH) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The intestinal compartment is the first line of contact with food and serves as integrator and relay for signals derived from the interplay of microbiota, food, different epithelial cell types and immune cells. The current project aims to mechanistically explore how these interactions impact cardiometabolic disease and to delineate the signalling pathways involved. The intended experiments span from cell culture to in vivo models of disease (including work with germ-free models). Results from multiple layers of information derived from bulk RNA and single cell sequencing together with proteomics and metabolomics will be integrated to discover and map novel signaling pathways. These approaches are complemented with lipid biochemistry and in vivo characterization of metabolism using dynamic tests.

34. Postdoctoral Researcher in oral and intestinal mucosal immunology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The nasopharynx and the oral mucosa are the gate of first encounter between environmental elements and the gastrointestinal tract. The complexity of different and well differentiated mucosal tissues, as well as the presence of distinct microenvironments, make the oral cavity a unique mucosal barrier that has been largely understudied. It is known that the oral cavity could be a mirror of systemic diseases, such as IBD and CRC, and that the disturbances in the oral immune homeostasis could be linked with systemic illness. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms behind those interactions and its consequences in health or disease are still unresolved. The goal of this project is to elucidate how the disruption of the immune homeostasis at the oral or gut mucosal barriers could influence each other, and to propose the potential mechanisms behind those interactions.

37. Postdoctoral studies in regeneration

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Simon research group is studying regeneration processes in aquatic salamanders. Natural examples of regeneration, such as salamanders, may unravel novel strategies for cell replacement of damaged or lost tissues. We study regeneration mechanisms in an aquatic salamander, the newt, which has the widest repertoire of regenerative abilities among tetrapods. During the past decade, our laboratory has developed several methods, which has made these outstanding questions experimentally tangible. We place our findings on newt regeneration into an evolutionary context and test our results in a variety of mammalian in vivo and in vitro assays. The main target tissue of our investigations in the context of limb regeneration is skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle can contribute to limb regeneration in two ways, either by activation of quiescent stem cells or by dedifferentiation of differentiated muscle fibers. By various cell tracking strategies, we try to compare these two processes to each other in terms of their relative contribution to the limb. We also characterize molecular processes involved in the generation of limb progenitors from skeletal muscle.
