25. Research Associate

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are seeking a researcher to join a collaborative project between Manchester and Cambridge, funded by the Wellcome Trust. The project focuses on the role of neuronal activity in facilitating the emergence of network function late in Drosophila embryogenesis, during a critical period. Critical periods provide exciting opportunity to manipulate circuit development and offer novel therapeutic approaches to prevent, or indeed reverse, neurological disease. We recently discovered a critical period in the development of the Drosophila larval locomotor circuit, showing this to be a universal phenomenon. This experimental system allows us to work with identified neuron pairs, to investigate signalling pathways and circuit mechanisms, including changes in synaptic connectivity and transmission. The specific focus of this post is how altered neural activity is sensed and transduced by a developing nervous system, with specific interest in cellular redox states.

The work will involve developing models of power electronic converter interfaced energy storage systems (specifically flywheel and compressed air storage), their associated controls, and network connection, in PSCAD and then on an RTDS (Real Time Digital Simulator). The research is part of a project to investigate the operation of grid-scale storage funded by UKRI. You should have a PhD or equivalent in power engineering as well as demonstrable experience in modelling of power electronics at a distribution or transmission system level, electro-mechanical systems modelling, and control of electrical systems. Experience working with a RTDS is desirable but not essential (training will be provided).
