The PhD project focuses on modelling of time-dependent electron transport in nano-systems subject to high fields and driven far from equilibrium. We will employ first principles computational methods based on density functional theory to generate input parameters to the time-dependent Boltzmann transport equation (NTU). The theory is relevant for the understanding of experiments where strong pulses of THz radiation are used to probe material properties and to explore new THz-technology based on novel nanostructures. If you aim at scientific excellence and want to establish a career as a scientist within mid infrared (mid-IR) surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors and their applications, then we have the ideal opportunity for you. In fiber optics based SPR sensors, the penetration depth of the evanescent wave into the sample under investigation depends on the resonance wavelength. The longer the wavelength, the higher the penetration depth. However, current SPR sensors are limited to the visible wavelength region. This can be overcome by generating SPR in the mid-IR region with optical fibers and plasmonic materials suitable for this wavelength region. SRP in the mid-IR are ideal for a range of application such as for monitoring in real time dynamic changes taking place in living cells which is difficult to achieve in the visible wavelength region. You will engage in the pursuit of new geometric and/or graph theoretic insights and apply them to develop new efficient algorithms and data structures. The research is in collaboration with the PhD adviser, associate professor Eva Rotenberg, who has a broad background in discrete algorithms theory, including geometry and graph algorithms. Together, we will approach questions relating to graphs, geometry, and algorithms, broadly, and questions on the border between geometry and graph algorithms, specifically. Possible directions include: algorithms and data structures for planar graphs, intersection graphs, or geometrically embedded graphs; theory and algorithms for graph drawing; and algorithms for computer graphics and geometry processing.

39. PhD scholarship in Computational Uncertainty Quantification for PDE-Based Inverse Problems

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This PhD project focuses on computational aspects of uncertainty quantification (UQ) for inverse problems formulated in terms of partial differential equations (PDEs) with applications in, e.g., inverse scattering problems and problems in electrical impedance tomography. For such problems standard sampling methods are computationally too expensive to work in practice, and therefore alternatives must be found e.g., via direct inversion formulas or surrogate models. The goal of the project is to develop and evaluate numerical UQ tools and best practices suited to these inverse problems. The project relies in a combination of theory development and numerical computations.
