The Tishkoff lab integrates genomic, transcriptomic, metagenomic, metabolomic, and epigenomic datasets generated from a large sample of ethnically diverse Africans, African Americans, and African immigrants in the US (http://www.med.upenn.edu/tishkoff/). We use evolutionary, statistical, population genetics and functional genomics approaches to understand the genetic architecture of a number of anthropometric, cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune related traits for which we have detailed phenotype data. We are seeking postdocs focused on computational biology, functional genomics and/or single cell studies of immune response. Training Program Summary: Neuroimaging has become a leading strategy used for translational research in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), as well as a prominent biomarker strategy for defining preclinical stages of ADRD, for clinical differential diagnosis of ADRD, and for evaluating for target engagement and therapeutic responses in clinical trials. Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Maxwell Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated and creative postdoctoral fellow to understand the role of inherited TP53 mutations and interactions with the immune system in breast tumor development. The PI, Dr. Kara Maxwell, runs the Li Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS) Biobank at Penn Medicine, which ascertains patients with inherited mutations in the tumor suppressor TP53. The LFS biobank contains extensive clinical information, germline and tissue samples, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and lymphoblastoid cell lines created from patients. Our studies have shown that certain hypomorphic TP53 mutations lead to high risks of breast cancer. Using knock-in breast cancer cell lines and patient derived lymphoblastoid cell lines, the postdoctoral fellow will characterize p53 pathway defects associated with these alleles. The fellow will utilize mouse models to study breast tumor development due to these TP53 mutations, both xenograft models and CRISPR knock-in models. Finally, the fellow will investigate the humoral and cellular responses to breast cancer development in our patient samples.

Postdoctoral positions to study the molecular physiologies of InsP3R and MCU Ca2+ ion channels and CALHM ion channels are available in the laboratory of Kevin Foskett at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Our focus is on the molecular physiologies of three ion channel families, and their roles in physiology, including bioenergetics, cancer, neurodegeneration and sensory perception. Hematopoietic stem cells give rise to all circulating blood cells throughout life. Maintenance of stem cell self-renewal, proliferation and differentiation is regulated by complex signaling pathways. Aberrant regulation leads to bone marrow failure or leukemia. Dr. Tong’s laboratory studies various signaling pathways in hematopoietic stem cells, bone marrow failure, and leukemia. Dr. Sean Hennessy, a clinical pharmacist and pharmacoepidemiologist, is PI of a National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded study entitled “Drug-Drug Interactions Involving Methadone and Buprenorphine”. This study will: i) perform high-throughput physiologically-based pharmacokinetic screening to predict the degree to which two-drug and three-drug combinations that include methadone or buprenorphine increase biological exposure to those agents; ii) perform high-throughput pharmacoepidemiologic screening of two-drug and three-drug combinations that include methadone or buprenorphine with regard to rate of emergency department presentation or hospitalization for opioid overdose and poisoning, opioid adverse effects, and cardiac arrest; iii) convene an independent multidisciplinary Expert Panel to review screening results and prioritize potential drug interaction pairs and triads for further investigation; and iv) conduct a series of rigorous pharmacoepidemiologic studies to inform causal inferences and thereby generate clinically-actionable evidence on prioritized methadone and buprenorphine drug-drug interactions.
