A post-doctoral position at The Center for Autism Research This adolescent-focused position will join a large-scale, multi-site study using computer vision and computational linguistics to develop novel measures of social communication and affect in ASD, anxiety, and depression. Two postdoctoral researcher positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Xiaolu Yang at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Our lab is interested in cancer, stemness, and neurodegeneration. The current projects focus on two areas: (1) The tumor suppressor p53, metabolism, and autophagy. We are interested in the regulation and functions of the preeminent tumor suppressor p53. Our results have revealed an important role for p53 in modulating metabolic pathways that are critical for biosynthesis and redox balance. We are investigating the function of p53 as both a sentinel and a regulator for metabolic activities. Furthermore, we are identifying and characterizing metabolic alterations that drive tumor initiation and progression. A recent extension of this research area is to define the role of metabolism and autophagy in stem cells, including embryonic stem cells and cancer stem cells. (2) Protein quality control, aging, and neurodegeneration. Our lab recently identified two protein quality control (PQC) systems, which consist of tripartite motif (TRIM) proteins and poly-Asp/Glu (polyD/E) proteins, respectively. Unlike canonical PQC systems, these new systems are independent of ATP. They are multifunctional and highly effective in suppressing protein misfolding and aggregation. We are investigating their mechanisms of action; their roles in aging and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and polyglutamine diseases; and their utility in treating these diseases.

The LiuLab utilizes modern cellular enzymology tools to investigate the functions of RNA modifying enzymes in cancer and neurological disorders. We are seeking a creative and interactive individual to join our group as a postdoctoral fellow to play an integral role in the establishment of a new wildlife health initiative at Penn Vet, the Wildlife Futures Program (WFP). The Bhoj Laboratory, a member of Penn’s Center of Cellular Immunotherapies (CCI), is looking for postdoctoral candidates interested in translational research focused on development of novel T cell immunotherapies. The over goal of the lab is to develop of CAR T cells and other platforms of engineered T cell-based immunotherapies for the treatment of diseases or conditions that are driven by pathogenic immune responses. The overarching premise is centered on the notion that T cell therapies offer several advantages in regard to target cell elimination and immunomodulation where traditional pharmacologic therapies fall short. Existing projects are focused on targeting B cells, plasma cells and T cells that drive autoimmune responses as well as allo-immune responses (e.g. anti-drug antibodies and organ/tissue allograft rejection. Several projects synergistically combine engineered T cell platforms with other biologicals or targeted small molecules for enhanced immune-modulation. Through highly collaborative efforts with academic and industry partners, projects span studies in rodent and NHP models as well as in humans in the form of active clinical trials and correlative studies using patient samples.

A full-time postdoctoral position is available in the Chou Lab in the Division of Hematology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania for an NIH-funded project to study and enhance in vitro generation of red blood cells from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for transfusion medicine. Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is one of the most common medical treatments, with over 10 million units transfused per year in the United States alone. There is a need for alternative sources of red cells for transfusion. In vitro generation of red cells is a major goal in the field of regenerative medicine but has been hampered by available methods and renewable cell sources for a sustainable supply. Moreover, the need for rare red cells for use as reagents to detect specific antibodies in transfused patients further fuels efforts for production of cultured red cells, especially those with “designer” red cell antigen phenotypes. The Chou lab has generated specialized human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) by reprogramming rare donor cells or by gene editing, and produced a renewable source of red blood cells (RBCs) with unique phenotypes, referred to as iRBCs.

A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available for highly motivated applicant in the laboratory of Dr. Fiona Simpkins at the University of Pennsylvania.
