29. Research Fellow (Chemistry)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Our research program lies at the interface of chemistry and biology, and involves the use of chemical, biochemical, genetic and biophysical approaches to characterize both the chemistry and biology of a given system. Our group is interested in membrane biogenesis, i.e. how a biological membrane is assembled. Membrane lipid bilayers form the basis for life, physically defining cells and organelles, and modulating the chemical environments within these compartments for optimal metabolism and growth. Despite these fundamental roles, however, our understanding of membrane biogenesis has remained rudimentary; we do not know how a cell makes more of itself. Conceptually, the assembly of a membrane involves acquisition of its protein and lipid constituents from another compartment where these molecules are synthesized. For lipids, this entails transport from one membrane to another, usually across an aqueous environment. Our research group is focused on using bacterial outer membranes as models to understand membrane biogenesis. Specifically, we are interested in elucidating the mechanisms of inter-membrane phospholipid and mycolic acid trafficking in Gram-negative bacteria and mycobacteria, respectively.

49. Research Fellow in Asia Research Institute (Asia Studies)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The Plastic Waste and Women’s Household Practices in Asia and Australia Project sets out to advance research and knowledge on the social, historical and digital practices that shape women’s household management of plastic waste. The project aims to identify and understand the dynamics associated with household consumption and disposal of plastics in Singapore, Australia and Japan, so as to complement the national and global aspirations to realise a circular economy. By extending knowledge of how gendered labour in the household context (including citizen women and migrant domestic workers) shapes the consumption and disposal of plastic waste, we highlight the importance of including gender analysis through a household lens in rethinking the environmental policy agenda. The project is funded by the Singapore Ministry of Education Academic Research Fund Tier 2.
