Machine Learning (ML) provides engineers with the prospect of producing data-driven software, with little manual code writing. We are at a turning point in the software industry, as key functionalities are no longer programmed in “the old fashioned way” but implemented by training ML models with data that reflect the expected system behaviour. Manufacturing companies in the Industry 4.0 era are increasingly looking for implementing Predictive Maintenance (PdM) to predict failures, classify faults, and optimize maintenance tasks. Summary of Doctoral Project:
As the successful candidate, you will join the Security, Reasoning and Validation (SeRVal) group of the SnT, headed by Prof. Yves Le Traon. You will contribute more specifically to a partnership project with Lombard International Assurance S.A. (further referred simply as Lombard). The topic of the project is “Data Science for the Insurance” and it concerns the design and implementation of AI and QA methods to support and improve the operations at Lombard. More precisely, the project investigates concrete use cases for AI and data analytics in order to develop new capabilities such as predictive analysis, client profiling, chatbots, AI-assisted software development, etc. In addition, the project team will assist Lombard in setting up a development pipeline for AI technologies that will enable and facilitate the exploration of other use cases in the future. The project is held in close collaboration with Lombard and, as the successful candidate, you will be expected to spend an appreciable amount of your time in their Luxembourgish premises (located in Luxembourg City, in front of the airport).

The doctoral researcher will conduct research under the guidance of a supervisory team including local and international experts, with the aim of studying towards a doctoral degree (cumulative; i.e., based on peer-reviewed publications) in Psychology. The doctoral researcher will develop a diagnostic test for specific learning disorders in the area of reading/writing adapted to the linguistically heterogenous Luxembourgish school context (i.e. diverse language and cultural backgrounds) in the main teaching language German. 38. Doctoral candidate (Ph.D. student) focusing on the function of the human microbiome in chronic diseases
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The human gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem which contributes essential functions to human physiology. Changes to the microbiome are associated with several chronic diseases characterised by inflammatory signatures which include autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases. The gut is a reservoir for extensive microbial “dark matter” in the form of soluble nucleic acids, (poly-)peptides and metabolites with bioactive properties. These molecules have so far eluded in-depth study. This gap in knowledge is limiting our understanding of the role of the human microbiome in governing human physiology and how changes to the gut microbiome impact inflammation-linked chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). As part of the ERC-funded ExpoBiome project, a gut microbiome-targeted therapeutic intervention, i.e. fasting, is being performed together with leading clinical partners in Berlin (Germany) and Kassel (Germany). Based on systematically collected samples, the aim is to identify and track common and disease-specific molecular signatures to predict the outcome of the therapeutic fasting regimen.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
The PhD work will concentrate on developing the path-integral formalism to large molecular systems beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Originally introduced by Feynman, the path-integral approach has led to a variety of different techniques with diverse applications in physics and chemistry. This project includes a path-integral description of the Molecular Aharonov-Bohm effect caused by the fact that nuclei undergo a vector potential related to the geometric phase of electronic states (especially, due to conical intersections of the potential energy surfaces). The PhD student will learn various aspects considering the problem from different points of view (related to math, physics, and chemistry) as well as its connection to other topics (like the exchange interaction between indistinguishable particles and non-Abelian electromagnetism or Yang-Mills theory).
