2. Postdoctoral Research Associate
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Positions are available to investigate synapse formation, synaptic plasticity and pathological mechanisms of brain disorders. We are interested in synapse formation, function, and plasticity, and how these processes are altered by disorders. We have revealed molecular mechanisms of the assembly and maintenance of synapses including the neuromuscular junction, a synapse that controls muscle contraction. We have identified novel biomarkers for neuromuscular disorders, including anti-LRP4 antibody that is now used widely in clinic in the world. We have uncovered physiological functions and pathological mechanisms of many risk genes of brain disorders including schizophrenia, autism, and major depression. We showed that the signaling of neuregulin 1 and ErbB4, both risk genes of depression and schizophrenia, is critical to GABA transmission and thus regulates local and inter-regional synchrony and brain functions. We have a long history of applying emerging new technologies (genetically manipulated mouse models, optogenetics, in vivo recording with multi-electrodes and calcium imaging in free-moving mice, viral tracing, and single cell RNA-seq). Our lab alumni have become independent scientists in Canada, China, India, Korea, and the US.

3. Postdoctoral Research Associate
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Positions are available to investigate molecular, cellular, and systemic mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders We are interested in molecular, cellular, and systemic mechanisms underlying pathogeneses of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Specifically, we are addressing two unique questions: Are neurodegenerative diseases developmental disorders? Are neurodegenerative diseases systemic disorders? To address these questions, we have used a combination of molecular, biochemical, cell biological methods and various types of genetic mutant mouse models; and have obtained many interesting findings. We identified early onset osteoporotic deficit and sarcopenia-like muscle phenotypes in AD animal models; we detected early onset hyper osteoclastic bone resorption in PD relevant animal models; and we found that these peripherical tissue (bone and muscle) defects could contribute to the AD/PD relevant brain pathologies. Additionally, we observed developmental neuronal phenotypes in mouse models selectively knocking out AD/PD risk gene (e.g., VPS35) in neurons.
