5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Meaning In Life in the Digital Society

Summary of PhD Program:

This research project investigates the risks and opportunities presented by virtual reality technology (VR) and generative AI (GenAI) for meaning in life. In the last four decades, philosophers have increasingly emphasized that, contrary to a widely held philosophical position, humans are not only motivated either by self-interest or moral demands but additionally, by a pursuit of meaning in life. Digital technologies such as VR and GenAI may contribute to a meaningful life or make our lives less meaningful. However, the conceptual and normative issues around meaning in life in the digital society have been widely neglected so far.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Veterinary Anatomy

Summary of PhD Program:

The focus of our research, STAR protein, plays a rate-limiting part in the provision of steroids and is an important factor in the regulation of homeostasis, affecting the role of several organ systems, including the reproductive organs and adrenals. Thus, understanding the basic regulatory mechanisms involved in steroidogenesis is of special physiological and clinical relevance. The multiple signaling events controlling steroidogenesis involve the cross-talk between different regulatory pathways, with hypoxia/HIF1a-mediated effects playing important roles as an integral part of physiological regulations. The regulatory pathways described in our research group emphasize the need for further investigations into the complex nature of these processes.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Empowering AI to Explore the Space of Reasons

Summary of PhD Program:

Human belief systems are made up of networks of claims that are connected by logical relationships of entailment and contradiction – the so-called space of reasons. Recent developments in natural language processing and the philosophy of language have opened a unique window of opportunity to explore this space of reasons. Project AIR seizes this opportunity, aiming to develop a novel hybrid method in natural language inference to build a data-grounded representation of this space of reasons. Following a radically open approach and building on aesthetic insights, the project will develop an interface to allow the general public to interact with (and thereby keep updated) our representation of the space of reasons. The specific PhD research topic will be determined based on the candidate’s interests and expertise, in consultation with the supervisory team.
