Summary of PhD Program:
The “A War Without End” project, located at the intersection of history, sociology and international relations, explores the memory of the Cold War in Russia after the break-up of the Soviet Union and how it became formative of national identity. It examines how the assessment of the Cold War evolved from the Boris Yeltsin to the Vladimir Putin eras while it integrated collective memory and what role the memory of the Cold War has played in developing and supporting national narratives. It analyses how the Cold War has featured in Russian public discourse and society since 1992 and how Russian far-right, leftist, nationalist, liberal, Orthodox and other ideological groups and mnemonic communities such as Soviet-Afghan War veterans, former communist elites and victims of Soviet repressions have taken hold of the Cold War.

The Digital & Mobile Health Group is an interdisciplinary research team at the Institute for Implementation Science in Health Care, with close ties to the Digital Society Initiative of the University of Zurich. We are developing methods for next-generation research studies by collecting and analyzing multimodal sensor-, smartphone-, and patient-reported health data for chronic disease research (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis) and public health. The focus of our research, STAR protein, plays a rate-limiting part in the provision of steroids and is an important factor in the regulation of homeostasis, affecting the role of several organ systems, including the reproductive organs and adrenals. Thus, understanding the basic regulatory mechanisms involved in steroidogenesis is of special physiological and clinical relevance. The multiple signaling events controlling steroidogenesis involve the cross-talk between different regulatory pathways, with hypoxia/HIF1a-mediated effects playing important roles as an integral part of physiological regulations. The regulatory pathways described in our research group emphasize the need for further investigations into the complex nature of these processes.

Human belief systems are made up of networks of claims that are connected by logical relationships of entailment and contradiction – the so-called space of reasons. Recent developments in natural language processing and the philosophy of language have opened a unique window of opportunity to explore this space of reasons. Project AIR seizes this opportunity, aiming to develop a novel hybrid method in natural language inference to build a data-grounded representation of this space of reasons.
