3. Postdoctoral Researcher in Metabolic Engineering in RNA virus infection
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Are you interested to learn how our immune system interacts with viruses and can we explore virus weakness to eliminate it? We are looking for a Post-Doctoral researcher for our research theme, the correlates of immune protection against RNA viruses, who will work mainly to understand the immune-metabolic modulation during acute or chronic viral infection. A major focus of the work will be on virus-host cell interaction and to determine the signaling pathways that drive virus-induced disease biology in HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2. Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The Malmberg Lab is located in Stockholm/Sweden and Oslo/Norway and currently consists of 24 people. We are now looking for a highly motivated post-doc with an interest in molecular immunology and experimental immunotherapy. The project concerns the differentiation of human NK cells from inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), with a particular focus on directed differentiation into effector cells with desired phenotype and function. One central element is to use our synthetic biology platform to improve the persistence and boost the cytotoxic potential of iPSC-derived NK cells. This project is carried out in close collaboration with our US-based industrial partner Fate Therapeutics and the Malmberg Lab at Oslo University Hospital.

5. Postdoctoral studies in Central Nervous System Regeneration after Spinal Cord Injury
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Our lab investigates stromal scar formation and its impact on axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury. We discovered a new population of perivascular cells, called type A pericytes, as the source of fibrotic scar tissue (Göritz et al., Science, 2011) and identified pericyte-derived scar formation as a therapeutic target to achieve axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury (Dias et al., Cell, 2018). Recently, we showed that fibrotic scarring by perivascular cells is a conserved mechanism in the adult mammalian CNS (Dias et al., Nature Com., 2021). The intended project will test different strategies to interfere with fibrotic scarring to enhance axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury.

7. Postdoctoral Researcher/The Strategic Research Programme for Diabetes (5)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
We recently demonstrated that glutamine levels are lower in white adipocytes from obese compared to lean subjects and that this leads to white adipose tissue (WAT) inflammation (Petrus, Lecoutre et al, Cell Metabolism, 2020). Our new preliminary data in human and murine WAT, reveal that these changes are associated with decreased expression of Glutamine Synthase (GS, encoded by GLUL) and increased expression of glutaminase (GLS, encoded by GLS), the two enzymes governing glutamine metabolism. This suggests that glutamine turnover is a major determinant of adipocyte function. To further dissect the pathophysiological role of our observations in vivo, we have generated adipocyte-specific Gls and Glul knockout mice where we will study the effects of different perturbations on WAT and whole body metabolism. These analyses will be complemented by state-of-the-art mechanistic studies in human adipocytes in which we for instance will perform metabolic flux analyses following CRISPR/Cas9-mediated engineering of the glutamine pathway.

10. Postdoctoral Researcher/The Strategic Research Programme for Diabetes (1)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Many immune mediated diseases including type-I diabetes are linked to perturbed immune system development or skewed immune-microbiome relationships early in life. Most information on immune development to date stems from mouse models or cord blood, but neither of these can account for environmental exposures in human newborns. Our group has performed a first longitudinal study of immune development in human newborns using modern systems immunology methods and revealed immune-microbe differences with possible relevance to diseases such as type I diabetes. Microbial composition is influenced by mode of delivery, feeding and antibiotic exposure and the microbiome evolves through an ordered sequence of events.

16. Postdoctoral Researcher/The Strategic Research Programme for Diabetes (2)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
We are interested in understanding how skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity is altered, both in response to pathology such as type diabetes, and as a response to physical exercise. This fellowship programme is focused on the role of miRNAs in this regard, in particular miRNAs in small extracellular vesicles (also called exosomes. We have previously identified several miRNA which are dysregulated in skeletal muscle in subjects with type 2 diabetes, and which contribute to changes in metabolism and insulin signalling, including let7 (Jiang et al., 2013), miR-29 (Massart et al., 2017) and mIR20b (Katayama et al., 2018). Since miRNAs are able to target multiple genes simultaneously, miRNAs provide a potential mechanism for efficiently modulating a whole pathway to change or alter the functional properties in specific target tissues.

17. Postdoctoral Researcher/The Strategic Research Programme for Diabetes (3)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Comorbidities of type II diabetes (T2D) are major health concerns worldwide, including peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD lowers blood flow to the lower limb, causing muscle ischemia and dysfunction and reduced exercise tolerance. Functionality of limb skeletal muscle is a key component for determining morbidity and mortality risk in patients with PAD. Interventions that improve distal arterial pressures (ie. bypass surgery) generally fail to normalize the structural and functional abnormalities of muscles, which point towards pathophysiological mechanisms inside the skeletal myofibers that reduce overall muscle function. Despite serious muscle abnormalities, the field is lacking molecular understanding of PAD-induced muscle dysfunction.

18. Postdoctoral Researcher/The Strategic Research Programme for Diabetes (4)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The postdoctoral project will focus on pharmacoepidemiological research and causal inference methods using data from national health, population and quality registers. The aim is to investigate the impact of socioeconomic factors on antidiabetic medications (ADM) use, discontinuation and type 2 diabetes (T2D) consequences such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure and retinopathy. The overarching purpose of the project is to identify differences in patterns of ADM use across socioeconomic groups, which will ultimately provide evidence for the development of targeted interventions for treatment management and guidelines increasing awareness about high-risk groups among the vulnerable population of T2D patients.

27. Postdoctoral researcher to study synergistic effects between DNA damaging cancer therapeutics and targeted agents for an industrial collaboration
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Cancer is often characterized by genome instability which is one of the enabling characteristics of cancer. Along the progression of cancer, mutations occurring in the genome maintenance and surveillance systems endanger the integrity of the genome. This genome instability results in new mutations and genomic rearrangements driving cancer progression via selection of favourable phenotypes. However, genomic instable cancer cells are more vulnerable to DNA damage than non-malignant cells since their DNA repair machinery often is deficient. This cancer cell vulnerability, along with the high proliferation rate of cancer cells, enables the usage of DNA damaging cancer treatment, such as ionizing radiation and chemotherapy, which have been used in cancer treatment for nearly a century.
