PINNACLE (The Epidemiology Of ParkINson In LatiN AmeriCa: Learning From UndEr-represented Populations) is a project founded by the Michael J Fox Foundation to determine parkinsonism and Parkinson’s Disease (PD) prevalence, incidence, correlates and impact in six Latin American countries (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Venezuela) and to also explore the main cognitive and neuro-psychiatric features of Parkinson’s Disease. As part of the project we also aim to start a discourse with different stakeholders to better understand future research priorities for PD in the Latin American region. This component will be carried out in collaboration with the Alianza Iboeroamericana de Parkinson. Most of the work will be carried out using data from the 10/66 Dementia Research Group studies. The successful post-holder will develop protocols for data analyses in discussion with the PIs of the project, carry out data analyses and draft manuscripts for publications. They will also liaise with the PINNACLE PIs, 10/66 PIs and other stakeholders. Finally, they will work in collaboration with the Alianza Iberoamericana de Parkinson to develop a survey to capture research priorities in the region.

This post plays a key role in the development and delivery of a specific task in the prestigious EU IMI-funded large programme of autism research, AIMS-2-TRIALS. AIMS-2-TRIALS has the overall aim of evaluating interventions for autistic people, to reduce core and co-occurring symptoms that impair quality of life. This task within this work package will develop, test and implement both established and novel objective measures of core and co-occurring symptoms, in order to provide more accurate evaluation of treatment response as well as more sensitive indices of a possible treatment signal, thus ultimately allowing interventions to be evaluated more rapidly (‘fast-fail’). These objective measures will include data acquired in face-to-face assessments as well as via remote monitoring. Data collection for this task is underway as part of the third wave of the Longitudinal European Autism Project (LEAP) study and comprises components including a conventional diagnostic assessment augmented by video and wearable device data, and a Health remote monitoring system encompassing data collection from a wearable device, phone sensor and smartphone applications.

Viruses employ various strategies to avoid host cell defence-mechanisms and coax host cells into virus particle production. In doing so viruses must strike a careful balance to keep host cells alive until enough viral progeny has been created. During cellular influenza A infection, host transcription termination is inhibited, preventing translation of newly transcribed host-defence RNA. We now seek a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop an innovative research project that will uncover how host cells react and counteract influenza A-mediated inhibition of transcription termination, and ensure cellular survival in the absence of newly generated translatable RNA. You will combine system-biological and candidate approaches using multidisciplinary methods from genetics, transcriptomics, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology (see for example Mischo et al. Molecular Cell, 2018). This postdoctoral role is a great position with which to apply biological in vivo skills to several questions relating to novel cell-based anti-cancer therapies and understanding how immune cells migrate through the body. It is funded by the EPSRC Research Programme on Next Generation of Molecular Imaging and Therapy with Radionuclides (MITHRAS) and aims to study the biological effects within a variety of cells, e.g. T cells, macrophages, stem cells, labelled with radioactive radionuclides and to quantify the minimum level of radioactive cells administered into animals that can still be picked up by non-invasive imaging using preclinical positron emission tomography (PET). This project sits within the context of the increasing likelihood of availability to total body PET, which will have huge implications for tracking of cell-based therapies in particular. Total body PET would allow cell labelling with up to 40-fold lower activities and could also enable more long-term imaging. The main limitation for PET in cell tracking is a concern that radionuclides impart high radiation doses to the labelled cells, with unknown effects on their behaviour, e.g. do they survive; at what level do they survive and do they remain unaltered?

This post provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to the leadership and management of a new UKRI Network Plus (“RESPECT 4 Neurodevelopment”). RESPECT for Neurodevelopment stands for Responsible, Reliable, Scalable and Personalised Neurotechnology for Neurodevelopmental Conditions. Our goal is to build a multidisciplinary community to advance child-specific neurotechnologies to underpin precision medicine for neurodevelopmental conditions. This role is for a postdoctoral research associate to explore methods for the improvement of vision through gene transfer to the photoreceptor cells. It is an opportunity to work within a leading translational eye research group led by Professor Robin Ali. Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
We are seeking a Post-doctoral Research Associate to join the laboratories of Stuart Bevan and David Andersson at King’s College London (KCL). As a successful candidate, you would join a clinical-preclinical collaborative research team funded by the UKRI MRC Advanced Pain Discovery Platform (APDP) to investigate the mechanisms responsible for pain in Long-COVID patients. The clinical studies will be conducted in Cambridge under the direction of Dr. Mike Lee, and you would study pre-clinical aspects of this translational research programme at KCL. The studies will involve behavioural studies to investigate the role of antibodies in mediating pain and sensory neuron dysfunction as well as in vitro studies to determine the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms. The experiments will employ approaches that we used to demonstrate a role for autoantibodies in pain and fatigue in fibromyalgia patients (J Clin Invest. 2021 Jul 1;131(13):e144201).

Applications are invited for a 12 month Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in the Department of Diabetes at King’s College London, working with Prof. Shanta Persaud’s group. The project is focused on determining the effects of C1QL1-derived proteins on isolated mouse and human islet function in vitro and on glucose homeostasis in mice in vivo. The post holder will use in vitro molecular/cell biology and in vivo techniques and results arising from this study will build on our ongoing research investigating how C1QL1-derived proteins improve islet function and also identify whether long term administration in vivo has beneficial effects on glucose homeostasis through increased insulin secretion and/or beta-cell mass. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant biomedical sciences subject and have expertise in using mouse models for metabolic studies and/or in vitro assessment of cell function. Prior experience of islet biology research would be an advantage.

This is an exciting new position where the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work as part of an internationally leading team of researchers investigating cannabinoid-based treatments for neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders and play a key role in a new line of research investigating the safety, efficacy and mechanism of action of a novel cannabinoid-based pharmacological treatment for Parkinson’s disease psychosis. As part of this role, the appointed person will be directly involved in a multi-centre Parkinson’s UK funded randomised clinical trial to evaluate this new pharmacological treatment for people with Parkinson’s disease and Psychosis. Applications are invited for an enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the lab of Dr. Katie Long at the Centre for Developmental Neurobiology, King’s College London, in collaboration with Dr. Yanlan Mao at the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology, University College London. This collaborative project aims to investigate the mechanisms and mechanics underlying the role of the extracellular matrix in tissue morphogenesis in development. Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
This is a new Postdoctoral Research Associate role in the SEP-MD (Social and economic predictors of severe mental disorders) data linkage study. The SEP-MD study is an ESRC funded study, based on one of the first UK data linkages of mental health records to individual-level ONS Census data. Using this data linkage, we will be assessing social risks for mortality, in-patient psychiatric admissions and long-term worklessness in people with severe mental illnesses, with a focus on ethnicity and migration status. The Department of History in King’s College London invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate to collaborate on a UKRI FLF project, Medicine and the Making of Race, 1440-1700, led by Dr. Hannah Murphy. Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
In this project the research associcate will use Drosophila and mouse models of mitochondrial disease to investigate how mitochondrial metabolism contributes to neuronal dysfunction and neurodegeneration. Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in neurodegenerative diseases, including mitochondrial diseases, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Mitochondrial dysfunction triggers mitochondrial stress signalling pathways. Dr Bateman’s lab have developed Drosophila models of mitochondrial stress signalling in neurons. Our studies have shown that activation of mitochondrial stress signalling modifies neuronal function (Cagin et al. 2015, PNAS; Duncan et al., 2018 PLoS Genetics; Hunt et al., 2019 J Cell Biol). This project will study how mitochondrial stress signalling alters the levels of metabolites called polyamines in the brain to contribute to pathology in mitochondrial disease.
