Our laboratories have extensive experience in hematopoiesis and leukemia research, and we have previously conducted complementary pioneering work on improving bone marrow transplantation through creation of novel conditioning methods and enhanced hematopoietic grafts. We have previously demonstrated that hematopoietic stem cell depletion is a critical component to donor cell engraftment and several agents that enable safe and targeted conditioning are now in development based upon our work. We are now using these agents as probes to understand underlying hematopoietic biology and are applying these to the treatment of candidate diseases of great need, with a focus on using these as curative agents for pediatric leukemia as we have found these agents also target leukemia initiating cells.

The Cornfield Lab at Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics is looking for a talented postdoctoral fellow to lead a new NIH-funded project aimed to define the role of lung pericytess in regulating pulmonary vascular growth, tone, and remodeling. Our prior studies employed single cell RNA sequencing to define developmental diversity in mesenchymal cell phenotype during late embryonic and early postnatal life. These studies identified a potential role for hypoxia-inducible-factor (HIF) signaling in pericytes as essential for postnatal angiogenesis and alveolarization. The successful candidate will lead a project that leverages single cell RNA sequencing, ChIP-sequencing, lineage tracing, and genetic mouse models containing cell-specific, inducible deletions of key proteins within the HIF pathway to define the role of lung pericytes in regulating pulmonary vascular growth and function.

The goal of the research in the laboratory is to understand the pathophysiology of movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. At Stanford, innovations in neural interface technology have allowed us to discover how abnormal electrical brain activity contributes to disorders in movement. In the Human Motor Control and Neuromodulation Lab, the first decoding of electrical activity in deep brain structures during abnormal movement in Parkinson’s disease patients was performed using novel and investigative sensing neurostimulators. Our team has deconstructed brain activity to discover both the neural code responsible and kinematic quantification for various motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease.

We are seeking a postdoctoral scholar in the lab of Dr. James Ford in the Division of Oncology at the Stanford School of Medicine. Our lab focuses on understanding the role of genetic changes in cancer genes involved in the risk and development of common cancers and on manipulating DNA repair mechanisms for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Solid tumors often exhibit high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in oxidative damage and the generation of 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG), a common source of mutations and DNA damage in the cell. ROS likely impacts the initiation of BRCA-mutated triple negative breast cancer through the accumulation of mutations in the cell. Upregulating base excision repair (BER) pathways is a potentially viable approach to inhibiting tumorigenesis in BRCA-mutated individuals by reducing mutagenesis.
